Was there confusion of the dress code at this year’s Met Gala? I always remember the Met Gala to be one of the most prestigious fashion events of the year where the celebs dressed to impress in luxurious ball gowns, a real cinderella occassion. So why on earth did Taylor Swift turn up in a skimpy dress she would wear on stage at one of her concerts? And Selena? In pyjamas??
The Met Gala is the Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Intitution Benefit, which sees the elite show up for a black-tie event in aid of the Costume Institute. It’s held every first Monday of May and this year’s theme was in accordance with the Met’s Manus x Machina Exhibition: Fashion in an Age of Technology. Tickets for the event are only $30,000. Only.
Two words to describe the style of this year’s Gala – silver and average.
We’ll begin with some of the worst looks of the night..
Tavi.. this is the Met Gala, not Sunday School.
Taylor Swift showed up as Jenny Humphrey returning to the Met steps for a new season of Gossip Girl.
Selena?????? Adding a leather bralet to your grandmother’s nightdress just didn’t do it for me. Do we even need to talk about the shoes?
I’m a huge Madonna fan, but oh my Madge. I have no words. But it is Madonna, and who could have expected anything less. #Respect
Katy, the dress yes, maybe not the gloves and a definite no to the hair and brows. May have been a good look for her Extra Terrestrial video..
And now for some of the few dresses that actually made an impression..
Poppy Delevigne, one of the first on the red carpet, I thought her dress quite mediocre but as everyone else began to appear, Poppy’s was actually one of the best, although like everyone else’s.. very silver.
Karolina Kurkova in Marchesa looked stunning (in silver) with the flower detail along the back of the dress and the train making it all that more elegant.
Zoe Saldana slayed with a huge train (flashback to Rihanna’s pizza train) and upped the style game at the event, putting Taylor and Selena to shame. The colour, the material, it all works even if it is a little peacock-y but beautiful all the same.
Nicole Kidman looked ethereal as ever in Alexander McQueen with a cape that resembled the night sky. Classy, elegant and poised.
Willow Smith (in Chanel) and Alexa Chung (in Thakoon) both rocked in sparkling black suits. Very chic. I like.
Emily Ratajkowski looked a vision in this sleek, simple Prabal Gurung dress. No silver, no metallic. Just class.
Bow down to Claire Danes who hands down stole the show and emersed herself in the true essence of the Met Gala. The dress was pure magic, congrats to Zac Posen who created the masterpiece.
Just to finish off I’d like to leave a reminder of who are still reigning King and Queen of the Met Gala and always will be #Goals
Who were your best and worst dressed at this year’s Met Gala?
