I absolutely loved my time in Singapore. What a city!

Itโ€™s vibrant, efficient, and so full of lifeโ€”itโ€™s hard not to fall in love. From the delicious food to the stunning skyline, every day was an adventure.

But if Iโ€™m being honest, there were a few things I wish I had known before I went. A little extra planning wouldโ€™ve saved me time, money, and maybe even a bit of sweat in that tropical heat!

This blog post is all about tips for visiting Singapore for the first time.

Tips For Visiting Singapore

Whether itโ€™s navigating public transport, finding the best hawker centres, or knowing what to expect at immigration.

These tips for visiting Singapore will help you prepare for your trip and make the most of your time in this amazing city.

So, if youโ€™re planning your first trip to Singapore, hereโ€™s everything I learned along the way to help your visit go as smoothly as possible. These are the best tips for visiting Singapore.

1. Use Public Transport

Singaporeโ€™s MRT (Mass Rapid Transit) system is an absolute dream. Itโ€™s clean, air-conditioned, and super efficient, connecting you to almost every major attraction.

We used the MRT the entire time we were there and found it incredibly convenient. Honestly, thereโ€™s no need to deal with traffic or taxis when public transport is this good.

You have a few options for paying:

  • Tap In and Out: This is what we did! You simply use your credit card or mobile wallet (like Apple Pay) to tap on and off at the turnstiles. No fuss, no extra costsโ€”it was perfect for us.
  • EZ-Link Card: A stored-value card you can top up for buses and trains. This might be worth it if youโ€™re staying longer or traveling frequently.
  • Singapore Tourist Pass: Offers unlimited rides for 1-3 days, but only worth it if you plan to take public transport multiple times a day.

For us, tapping in and out worked best, but your needs might differ. Either way, youโ€™ll love how easy it is to get around in Singapore!

2. Visit Hawker Centres for the Best (and Cheapest) Food

Hawker centres are right up my street. These bustling food courts are packed with rows of stalls offering a massive variety of dishes at super reasonable prices.

Whether youโ€™re in the mood for chicken rice, chili crab, or laksa, hawker centres are the best places to sample local dishes. Plus, the casual vibe makes it easy to mix and match dishes from different stalls.

My favourite was Newton Food Centre, which has a fantastic selection of satay and seafood. Other great ones include Maxwell Food Centre and Chinatown Complex Food Centre.

Honestly, Iโ€™d recommend eating at a hawker centre every nightโ€”itโ€™s a fun, affordable way to explore Singaporeโ€™s culinary scene. But if you fancy a nice restaurant for a change, thatโ€™s fair too!

3. Prepare for Rain (It Comes Out of Nowhere!)

Singaporeโ€™s weather can be unpredictable. One moment itโ€™s bright and sunny, and the next, youโ€™ll see a giant black cloud rolling in. Then comes the rainโ€”heavy, tropical rain like youโ€™ve never seen before.

The good news? It usually clears up in about 30 minutes, and the sun comes back as if nothing happened.

I highly recommend carrying a compact umbrella. Not only is it great for surprise downpours, but itโ€™s also perfect for blocking out the sun.

I became a huge fan of this in Japan after noticing how locals use umbrellas for shade. I might not try this in Irelandโ€”Iโ€™d probably get some funny looksโ€”but then again, itโ€™s rarely sunny back home!

4. Visit Sentosa Island

If youโ€™re staying in Singapore for more than 48 hours, make time for Sentosa Island. Often overlooked by first-timers, Sentosa offers a little bit of everything.

Want to relax? Check out the beautiful beaches like Siloso or Palawan. Feeling adventurous? Visit Universal Studios Singapore or also ride the Skyline Luge.

One of my favourite spots was the S.E.A. Aquarium, where you can see incredible marine life up close. History buffs can explore Fort Siloso, while thrill-seekers will love zip-lining across the treetops.

Itโ€™s a perfect day trip that feels like an escape from the city.

5. Experience Raffles Hotel (But Prepare Your Wallet!)

The Raffles Hotel is one of Singaporeโ€™s most iconic landmarks, so ordering the original Singapore Sling at the Long Bar is almost a rite of passage for tourists.

But be warnedโ€”this experience doesnโ€™t come cheap. At around SGD 37 per cocktail, itโ€™s definitely a splurge.

That said, the old-world charm of the Long Bar, combined with the fun of cracking open complimentary peanuts, makes it worth itโ€”once. Letโ€™s just say we ate our body weight in peanuts to get our moneyโ€™s worth!

6. Marina Bay Sands: Skip the Entry Fee, Go for Cocktails Instead

Everyone wants to go to the top of Marina Bay Sands for the stunning views, but did you know thereโ€™s a better way? Instead of paying for the SkyPark Observation Deck, head to Cร‰ LA VI SkyBar, which is located in the same building.

The view is nearly identical, and while thereโ€™s a minimum spend for drinks, itโ€™s comparable to the entry fee for the observation deck. Why not sip on a cocktail or two while enjoying the city skyline?

7. Stay Hydrated

The heat and humidity in Singapore can be intense, so staying hydrated is essential. Carry a reusable water bottle with you, and also take advantage of the water fountains youโ€™ll find at most attractions and malls.

Itโ€™s an easy way to save money and avoid dehydration while exploring.

8. Dress for the Heat

Light, breathable fabrics like cotton and linen are your best bet for staying comfortable in Singaporeโ€™s tropical climate.

Comfortable walking shoes are a must, especially since youโ€™ll be on your feet most of the day. Add a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen to your kit, so youโ€™ll be all set.

9. Explore Free Attractions

Singapore may have a reputation for being expensive, but there are plenty of free things to do! Some highlights include:

  • Gardens by the Bay: The Supertrees are free to explore, and the nightly light show is magical.
  • Singapore Botanic Gardens: A UNESCO World Heritage Site and a peaceful escape from the city.
  • Marina Bay Waterfront: Stunning skyline views that cost nothing.

10. Try the Local Cuisine

Food is central to Singaporeโ€™s culture, and the cityโ€™s culinary scene is a reflection of its rich multicultural heritage. So donโ€™t leave without trying:

  • Hainanese Chicken Rice
  • Laksa
  • Chili Crab
  • Kaya Toast

Pro tip: Stick to hawker centres for authentic flavours at affordable prices.

11. Follow the Rules (Seriously!)

Singapore is the cleanest city Iโ€™ve ever visited, and thatโ€™s thanks to its strict laws. From littering fines to bans on chewing gum, rules are enforced to keep the city safe and orderly.

While it might feel a bit intense, these rules make Singapore a truly unique and enjoyable place to visit. So stay safe, stay sensible, and youโ€™ll have a great time.

12. Carry Some Cash

Although Singapore is largely cashless, some hawker stalls, markets, and smaller shops only accept cash. So having SGD 50-100 on hand is a good idea to cover small purchases and meals.

13. Double-Check Attraction Hours

Many attractions have specific opening hours or are closed on certain days. Before heading out, check the timings online to avoid disappointment.

For example, the Cloud Forest and Flower Dome at Gardens by the Bay require tickets and have fixed hours.

14. Take Advantage of Festivals

Singapore is a cultural melting pot, and its festivals are a fantastic way to experience this diversity.

From the dazzling lights of Deepavali to the lively celebrations of Chinese New Year, thereโ€™s always something happening.

15. Have Everything in Order for Arrival and Immigration

Singapore is a stickler for paperwork, so make sure you have everything ready for a smooth arrival.

This includes:

  • An outbound flight booked: Immigration may ask to see proof of your departure.
  • Completing your SG Arrival Card: This can only be done a few days before your arrival and is a mandatory digital form.
  • Checking your entry requirements: These vary depending on your passport, so ensure you meet the visa or travel requirements.

With everything in order, youโ€™ll breeze through immigration and start your Singapore adventure stress-free.
