The Best Restaurants on Bold Street, Liverpool

Below are my favourite and the best restaurants on Bold Street in Liverpool.

This is my favourite street in the whole city, full of independents and incredible places to eat. You’ll find restaurants on this list for breakfast, brunch, lunch, dinner and everything in between.

No matter what cuisine you’re looking for or time of day, you’ll find somewhere great to eat in this list of the best restaurants on Bold Street.

1. Mowgli

Address: 69 Bold Street, Liverpool L1 4EZ

One of my favourite restaurants in Liverpool, I can remember when their only location was the original on Bold Street.

Now Mowgli has taken over most of the UK, and you can find a Mowgli restaurant just about anywhere.

An Indian-tapas restaurant, order as many dishes as you think you can handle, then order some more.

The decor of the place, the homely feel and the excellent service is what makes us go back time and time again, and I always book their Water Street location for special occasions.

Make sure to order Mowgli sticky wings – there’s nothing like them!

2. Elif

Address: 33 Bold Street, Liverpool L1 4DN

A spot on Bold Street that I’ve always been meaning to check out when living in Liverpool for university, that I only managed to try a few weeks ago.

The very popular Turkish restaurant on Bold Street is very popular for a very good reason.

We had booked to dine at Elif on Bold Street during December, and thankfully we did book as the restaurant was full with a queue of people outside, waiting to get in.

The food here is cooked at the front of the restaurant on grills, plain for everyone to see.

We loved the vibes of the place, the interior, the music, the 100 items on the menu (which obviously means we must go back to try more) and the mountain of food that we were served.

A very stodgy meal, be prepared to eat lots!

3. Bold Street Coffee

Address: 89 Bold Street, Liverpool L1 4HF

Unfortunately it wasn’t a sit-down meal, but I’m hoping we get to return very soon to enjoy a lovely weekend breakfast.

I’m a lover of Bold Street Coffee‘s coffee (it’s so good they put it in the name) and wanted to try out their breakfast menu.

I went for the Bold Street Bad Buoy, which, if you ever happen to have a hangover in Liverpool (very likely) then this will be your ultimate hangover cure.

It’s stodgy, it’s huge, it’s loaded with carbs and features the best hash browns you’ll ever eat. Trust me.

We even went back at the weekend for some avocado on toast and ordered a side of hash browns – if you know, you know.

4. Crust

Address: 25 Bold Street, Liverpool L1 4DN

A staple in my Bold Street book, I’ve visited Crust on Bold Street a few times over the years.

Voted the Best Pizza in England, this little Italian restaurant is very popular with the Scouse locals and tourists alike.

A date-night kind of spot, you should expect very rustic Italian food and top-class pizza.

Their pizza-inspired dessert is the one for me and I leave room for it every single time. Who knew Nutella on pizza could taste so good?!

5. Boojum

Address: 31 Bold Street, Liverpool L1 4DN

Of course after I move away from Liverpool, the Belfast student favourite Boojum moves in to Bold Street.

I’ve had many Boojums in Belfast (the biggest burritos you’ll ever have in your life) so I know the students of Liverpool are having the time of their lives now the Mexican restaurant has landed.

Honestly, these burritos weigh a few kilos and are the tastiest burritos I’ve ever had. Born in Belfast and now in a few locations around the UK, Liverpool is very lucky to have them.

6. Bakchich Lebanese Restaurant

Address: 54 Bold Street, Liverpool L1 4EA

I’ve dined at Bakchich a few times for lunch on Bold Street and love the flavours and huge portion sizes that they serve up for a really great price.

I’ve always wanted to dine at dinner time as it looks to be a very good date night spot on Bold Street, but the few lunch times I’ve been, I’ve been very impressed.

For a midweek shwarma or falafel, Bakchich is the spot!

7. Red Dog Saloon

Address: 66 Bold Street, Liverpool L1 4HR

One of the best restaurants on Bold Street if you’re looking for a feast. If you’re dining at Red Dog Saloon, come hungry!

This is an American-style restaurant with lots of BBQ food (aka lots of meat), burgers, sandwiches and meat dishes.

I always go for the BBQ pulled pork sandwich and all the sides like mac-n-cheese, coleslaw, fries, the works.

Red Dog Saloon is a great place to line the stomach before a night out on Liverpool, and it’s conveniently located on Bold Street, just steps from Concert Square.

It’s also probably one of the best restaurants on Bold Street for large groups as most restaurants on Bold Street are on the smaller size.

Bold Street Favourites that Are No More

This spot is a dedication to some of my favourite restaurants on Bold Street that have since closed, including institutions like Maggie Mays that was around for 30 years and Leaf that was on Bold Street for 15 years, but are now open in Smithdown.

I hope you’ll humour me with this little ode to the fallen soldiers of Bold Street as I really wish they were still here.

1. Leaf

This used to be the most popular spot on Bold Street in the mornings, and you’d be met with a queue of people lining down the street to get their breakfast.

I’ve dined at Leaf more times than I care to admit and this was the place where I tried avocado for the very first time all those years ago, so you can see why it holds a special place in my heart.

Even though the Bold Street location has now closed, Leaf is still operating in Smithdown, just a bus ride from Liverpool city centre, so I can still get my original avocado fix.

2. Maggie Mays

Maggie Mays was one of the most iconic venues in Liverpool, along with the Cavern Club (I kid not), a greasy spoon cafe in the middle of Bold Street.

It was mostly popular with the locals of Liverpool, as the menu consisted of hearty fry-ups and traditional English breakfasts (no eggs Benedict or avocado here), and of course, Scouse.

Perhaps it was because of all the international options around them that they had to close, maybe there was no one willing to take it over as it had been around for a long time, or maybe the cost of running it was too much.

I’m not sure why Maggie Mays closed, but I’m so gutted it has as it was a Liverpool institution.

I used to always go to Maggie Mays for their Scouse, especially on a miserable day in Winter (of which there were many).

Scouse is basically what we call Irish stew, so it was a meal from home for me.

3. Slim’s

We only managed to dine at Slim’s once before it closed, popping in one Sunday afternoon for one of their famous roast dinners. And oh my word, what a feast we had!

We ordered the sharing roast beef dinner for two and out came a mountain of food piled on a tray with the largest Yorkshire puddings I’ve ever seen.

I’m sad Slim’s is closed now as I could imagine this would have been a regular Sunday spot for us, especially for their sharing roast platter.

4. The Little Shoe

Before it was known as The Little Shoe, this place was East Avenue Bakehouse, another bakery/breakfast place.

Even with two changes, The Little Shoe didn’t survive either.

And it’s a huge shame because this little cafe at the top of Bold Street served the best avocado toast in the whole of Liverpool.

Their bread was to die for and the freshest we’d had since we started going out for breakfast around the city.
