The Best Brunch and Breakfast Spots in Byron Bay

This blog post is all about the best breakfast in Byron Bay. Or if you prefer a lie in (isn’t that the ethos of a Byron Bay vacation?) then I’ve also included the best brunch spots in Byron Bay too.

Australia basically invented the modern brunch scene and gave the world avocado toast, so it’s no surprise that Byron Bay, one of the country’s most food obsessed towns, is absolutely not short on brunch options.

If anything, the problem here is choice.

You’ve got grab and go pastries if you want to be on the beach in five minutes, proper sit down Instagram brunch spots for a slower morning, and beachy acai and health food cafes for the sunrise yoga crowd who are somehow already glowing before 8am.

I consider myself a fairly serious brunch connoisseur at this point, so here are my top recommendations from my time in Byron Bay, tried and tested, in no particular order except the one I’ve put them in.

During my recent five days in Byron Bay, I sampled a lot of breakfasts and brunches, pies, pastries and coffee, as you can see from the number of photos I’ve included in this blog post.

You can rest assured that the recommendations I give you below for the best brunch and breakfast in Byron Bay are coming from someone that goes to sleep thinking about where she’s going to have her next avocado toast.

The 13 Best Spots for Breakfast in Byron Bay

Below you’ll find the best spots for brunch and breakfast in Byron Bay. Whether you’re a local, new to the area or only visiting for a short amount of time, this list should help you find where you want to spend your morning in Byron.

Morning really is the best time of the day in Byron Bay, and my favourite thing to do was sit for a few hours over an incredible breakfast and one (or three) cups of coffee.

These are the breakfast spots in Byron Bay that I’ve tried myself and recommend, others are on my list to try and have been recommended to me by friends that have spent a lot of time in the Byron Bay region.

1. WOODS Bangalow

Address: Station Street, Bangalow

Firstly, it’s not technically in Byron Bay itself, but it’s in the nearby town of Bangalow, about 15 minutes away. Secondly, you should get in the car and head there anyway.

The Mexican shakshuka alone is worth the drive to WOODS Bangalow, and I will not hear otherwise.

This is hands down, the best brunch spot in the entire Byron Bay area. It’s the kind of meal that makes the short drive feel like nothing once you’re sitting there with a coffee and that shakshuka in front of you.

I will also recommend the avocado toast as it was just as good, but the winter shakshuka just pipped it. WOODS also usually have Turkish Eggs on the menu during the warmer months that we just missed out on, but I saw it was highly recommended on social media.

2. Combi

Address: Fletcher Street, Byron Bay

Now this one is in Byron Bay itself, and was actually only a two minute walk from our first Byron Bay accommodation, Drifter Byron Bay.

It was a no-brainer to have breakfast at Combi on our first morning in Byron Bay, as I almost rolled out of bed and straight into my seat. Talk about convenience.

You’ll probably have seen Combi all over Instagram and TikTok before you’ve even landed in Byron Bay, and it genuinely lives up to the hype.

Bamboo cladding, tropical pot plants, a hot pink coffee counter (a popular Instagram photo spot), it’s got Bali brunch cafe energy right in the centre of town.

The shakshuka is excellent, as is the scrambled eggs on toast with avocado, and the acai bowls are some of the best in Byron Bay. Which given how many acai bowls this town serves up, is a genuinely high compliment.

If you’re looking for the best breakfast in Byron Bay, you’ve found it. Note that the cafe is limited on seating so there may be a wait when you arrive, but it’s worth it!

3. Bayleaf Cafe

Address: 2A Marvell Street, Byron Bay

If I had one more morning in Byron Bay, Bayleaf Cafe would have been next on my list to try. But as a self-appointed Brunch Research Expert, it simply means I must go back to Byron Bay as soon as possible to try it and let you know about my experience.

However, Bayleaf is one of the most talked about brunch spots in Byron, so I have it on good authority that it deserves a spot at the top of this list of the best breakfast in Byron Bay.

The teal tiled interior and rich wooden decor make it one of the more photogenic brunch spots in town. But it’s not just a pretty backdrop, the food is excellent, working through seasonal, local produce with a menu that changes often enough to keep locals coming back.

Get to Bayleaf Cafe early, as this place gets busy fast and the queue outside by mid-morning tells you everything you need to know.

4. Byron Corner Store

Address: 47 Jonson Street, Byron Bay

Byron Corner Store is exactly what it sounds like, a proper Byron Bay institution tucked away just off the main strip, doing coffee, smoothies, sandwiches and pastries in equal measure.

It’s got that lovely lived in, slightly hidden feel in person, the kind of place locals send you to rather than something you’d stumble across on the main road with a huge crowd outside.

The coffee at Byron Corner Store is excellent, so grab an iced latte and a pastry here on your way to the beach and thank me later.

And if you’re in the market for some Byron Bay merchandise, Byron Corner Store is the place to go.

5. Sunday Sustainable Bakery

Address: 101 Jonson Street, Byron Bay

Everything at Sunday Sustainable Bakery is made by hand in house, and honestly, why wouldn’t you have a sausage roll or a pie for brunch when you’re on holiday?

The sourdough sells out regularly and the pastry selection changes often, so it’s worth popping in more than once during your stay to see what’s on offer that day.

Sunday Sustainable Bakery is a great grab and go option if you want something more substantial than just a coffee and croissant. It’s also a great place for people-watching, sitting on the decking and watching the world go by.

We shared a sausage roll and some coffees here to start our day of exploring and it did the job perfectly.

I would say it also looked like a great coffee shop to work from, something I’m always looking out for when I’m in a new place.

6. Hole in the Wall

Address: Lawson Street, Byron Bay

Hole in the Wall does double duty brilliantly, it’s just as good for a quick grab and go coffee and pastry as it is for actually sitting down and making a morning of it.

The coffee is properly good, the sandwiches hold their own, and then there are the pies, which honestly deserve their own paragraph.

If you’re torn between rushing to the beach and having a proper sit down brunch, this is the spot that lets you have it both ways.

PLUS (and this is a huge plus), the cafe is open until 9pm! This is something unheard of in Sydney, as locals would do a double-take if they saw someone with coffee any time past 2pm.

But at Hole in the Wall, you can grab a coffee later in the day, or if you’re looking for a coffee shop to work from that’s still open after lunch, Hole in the Wall is a great spot for digital nomads like myself.

7. The Farm

Address: 11 Ewingsdale Road, Byron Bay

You’re probably already planning to head to The Farm for dinner or lunch to get the Three Blue Ducks tasting menu, and you absolutely should, but don’t sleep on the breakfast options here either.

Set on a working farm with chickens wandering around your feet, the breakfast menu holds up just as well as dinner does, and there’s something so lovely about starting your day here rather than ending it.

I can say that we dined at Three Blue Ducks restaurant for lunch during our time in Byron Bay and it was out of this world. Honestly, it was one of the best meals of our entire trip. But if this is how good the lunch is, I can only imagine what the breakfast is like at Three Blue Ducks. I can almost guarantee it’s one of the best spots for breakfast in Byron Bay.

8. Byron Bay Grocer

Address: Tennyson Street, Byron Bay

Part shop, part cafe, Byron Bay Grocer is an easy one to underestimate until you actually sit down in the courtyard garden and work through the menu.

The bircher, granola and chia breakfast bowls are the standouts, along with fresh juices and protein smoothies if you want something a bit lighter before a day at the beach.

A great spot for breakfast in Byron Bay if you also need to grab a few bits for later while you’re there.

9. Masa Byron Bay

Address: Centennial Circuit, Byron Bay

Masa has that counter top bakery aesthetic down perfectly. Think of one beautifully lit pastry on display and you’re already picturing it.

It’s a great stop for a coffee and something sweet, and the kind of place that photographs as well as it tastes, which in Byron Bay is really saying something.

10. Byron Bay General Store

Address: Byron Bay town centre

An institution since 1947, the Byron Bay General Store nails that seaside cafe aesthetic, white exterior, timber floors, big umbrellas, the works.

The acai bowl is a genuine must try, as is the bacon and egg roll if you’re after something more classic.

Expect a queue for here, especially on weekends, but it moves quickly and it’s worth the wait.

A Few More Breakfast in Byron Bay Spots I’d Add

Based on how seriously Byron Bay takes its brunch scene, a couple more breakfast in Byron Bay spots are worth knowing about even though they weren’t on our original list.

11. Folk Byron Bay

Address: 399 Ewingsdale Road, Byron Bay

A five minute drive out towards Belongil Beach, Folk Byron Bay does an entirely plant based menu in a converted weatherboard cottage that’s somehow both hipster and homely at the same time.

If you’re vegan or vegetarian, this is probably the best place for breakfast in Byron Bay.

The buckwheat banana hotcakes and the Folk burrito are the ones to order.

12. Top Shop

Address: Carlyle Street, Byron Bay

An old 1950s milk bar turned cafe, Top Shop is worth the trip for the cinnamon swirls alone.

If you’re after something more classic then grab their bacon and egg roll before taking a walk down to Tallow Beach.

13. Happy Days

Address: Banksia Drive, Byron Bay

We actually did visit Happy Days and grabbed coffee, as we’d already had breakfast at Sunday Sustainable Bakery earlier that morning and were heading to Three Blue Ducks at The Farm afterwards.

We were wandering the area, stopping in at Our Timeless Threads, 100 Mile Table and The Stonery and stumbled across Happy Days at the back of some buildings. Honestly, you’d have no idea it’s even there as it’s basically in the car park behind the main building.

A true hidden gem, if you will.

Happy Days is known mostly for their sandwiches and homemade bread, and it’s clear to see why. We spotted a few people dining while waiting for our coffee and wished we’d know about this place sooner.

If you’re looking for a great spot for brunch in Byron Bay that does great sandwiches, I’d really recommend dining here. It’s cute, quaint and the perfect spot to sit outside in the sun.
