This blog post is all about things to do in Byron Bay if you’ve been before and already ticked off the classics, the hinterland day trips, hidden beaches and slower experiences worth returning for.

Byron Bay is the kind of place you want to return to over and over, and once you’ve been, you understand exactly why.
Life just moves a little slower here.
It’s got that quintessential Aussie surf town vibe running through everything, people walking around barefoot, great coffee on every second corner, and everyone seemingly going straight from work to the surf the moment the sun starts dropping.
It’s a hard feeling to describe to someone who hasn’t experienced it, and an even harder one to shake once you have.
We recently visited Byron Bay in June this year and are already itching to go back again. We ticked off as many of the main things to do in Byron Bay as possible, while also hunting out hidden gems and lesser-known activities.
If you’ve already done the classics, the lighthouse walk, Main Beach, the obvious restaurants, these are some things worth considering on your next trip back.

11 Things to Do in Byron Bay if You’ve Been Before
If you’ve already done the Cape Byron Lighthouse walk and ticked off classics like The Pass, Wategos Beach, and duelling pianos at the Northern Bar, then here are the best things to do in Byron Bay if you’ve been before and want to go deeper.
1. Visit Nimbin
If you haven’t made it out to Nimbin yet, this is the one to prioritise on your next visit.
About an hour’s drive from Byron Bay, Nimbin is a completely different world to the beach town you’ve come to know. Nimbin is the counterculture capital of the region with a history stretching back to the Aquarius Festival in the 1970s.
Go with an open mind, wander the main street, and treat it as a genuinely different side of Northern Rivers life.
It’s not for everyone, but if you’ve been to Byron Bay before, it’s a memorable contrast worth experiencing at least once.

2. Feel Zen at Crystal Castle & Shambhala Gardens
Tucked into the hinterland, Crystal Castle & Shambhala Gardens is exactly the kind of slightly left field experience that fits a repeat Byron Bay trip perfectly.
Wander through five hectares of subtropical gardens and regenerated rainforest, sit inside the Dragon Egg amethyst cave, and stand between the Crystal Guardians, some of the tallest smoky quartz geodes ever found.
There’s a daily crystal sound healing session at midday and 3pm if you want to lean fully into the wellness side of things, and honestly, once you’re back in Byron Bay for a second or third time, this is exactly the kind of afternoon that feels right.
3. Dive or Snorkel at Julian Rocks
If you’re a confident swimmer and haven’t done this yet, put it at the top of your ‘Things to Do in Byron Bay’ list.
Julian Rocks, just off the coast and visible from the shore, is a protected marine reserve and one of the best dive sites in the country.
It’s home to grey nurse sharks, leopard sharks, wobbegongs and an incredible amount of marine life packed into a small area.
Snorkelling tours run for those who’d rather not dive, and either way, it’s a completely different way to experience Byron Bay’s coastline than anything you’ll have done from the beach.
4. Do a Brewery and Distillery Tour
Byron Bay’s drinks scene deserves its own trip at this point.
Stone & Wood, the beloved local brewery, runs tours through the brewing process followed by a sit down in their beer garden, and Husk Distillers and Cape Byron Distillery both offer tastings and tours worth building an afternoon around.
A few operators run full day tours hitting multiple stops with lunch included, which makes for a relaxed way to spend a day without worrying about driving yourself between venues.
5. Find a Quieter Beach
By your second or third visit to Byron Bay, you’ll have done Main Beach, Clarkes, and probably Wategos.
If you’ve been to Byron Bay before, go looking for something quieter.
Whites Beach, tucked away south of town, and the longer stretches of Tallow Beach both give you a proper break from the crowds, and there are a few secluded spots further along the coast if you’re happy to walk a bit further than most people bother to.
6. Kayak or Paddleboard with Dolphins
If you did the sea kayaking tour on your first trip to Byron Bay, take it further this time with a stand up paddleboarding session.
Or, head slightly further afield to paddle the Brunswick River instead of the usual Main Beach or Wategos route.
You’ll paddle through mangroves, spot stingrays, birds and the occasional turtle, and it’s a very peaceful way to see a side of the region most visitors never bother with.
7. Go Horse Riding
This is an incredible Byron Bay hinterland experience really worth looking into if you’ve been to Byron Bay before.
Riding along the coastline or through the hinterland on horseback gives you a completely different perspective on the landscape, and a few of our friends have visited Zephyr to do this and said it was the highlight of their trip.
A couple of local operators run rides suited to varying experience levels, so it’s worth booking regardless of whether you’ve ridden before.

8. Day Trip to Newrybar
Newrybar is a tiny, one street village about 20 minutes from Byron Bay that’s easy to miss entirely on a first visit.
The Little General Store is the reason to go, serving great coffee, pastries and pies.
If you’re back in the Byron Bay region and have already exhausted the obvious food list (find my list of best restaurants in and around Byron Bay here), this is exactly the kind of quieter, more local find that rewards a second or third trip.
9. Soak at The Banya
If you haven’t made it out to The Banya yet, this is something to consider if you’re looking for things to do in Byron Bay if you’ve been before.
Tucked in Mullumbimby, about 20 minutes from Byron Bay, it’s a tranquil bathhouse experience with wood fired saunas, mineral plunge pools, and the kind of slow, restorative afternoon that suits a repeat visitor far more than a first timer rushing through the typical Byron Bay bucket list.
It pairs beautifully with a wander around Mullumbimby itself afterwards, and it’s exactly the kind of thing that tends to get missed on a first trip when the beach and the lighthouse are still the priority.
We visited for a coffee and to try their New York Cheesecake, which is also a must if you visit!

10. Try a Sound Healing or Cacao Ceremony
Byron Bay’s wellness culture goes deeper than yoga classes and day spas if you’re willing to lean into it.
Sound healing sessions, cacao ceremonies and similar experiences run regularly around town and in the hinterland.
And while it might not have been top of your list of things to do in Byron Bay the first time you visited, it’s exactly the kind of thing that fits once you’ve already done the basics and want something a bit different from your trip.
11. Go Deeper into Bangalow and Mullumbimby
You’ve probably already had brunch in Bangalow by now (WOODS is a must), but if you’ve been to Byron Bay before, slow down and actually explore both towns properly rather than just popping in for food.
Wander the boutiques in Bangalow beyond the main strip, and in Mullumbimby, beyond The Banya, there’s a genuinely local, slightly alternative energy worth spending an afternoon in rather than treating it as a quick stop on the way to somewhere else.

FAQs About Things to Do in Byron Bay if You’ve Been Before
Do I need a car for these activities?
Yes, for most of them. Nimbin, Crystal Castle, Newrybar, and the brewery and distillery tours are all outside the town centre and require a car or a booked tour with transport included.
Is Julian Rocks suitable for beginner divers?
There are options for both experienced divers and snorkellers, so it’s accessible even if you’ve never dived before, though it’s worth checking conditions and booking with a reputable local operator.
What’s the best way to see multiple hinterland spots in one day?
Nimbin, Crystal Castle and a distillery stop can realistically be combined into one loop if you start early, though it makes for a full day, so pick two if you’d rather not rush.
My Recommendation for Things to Do in Byron Bay if You’ve Been Before
If you’ve only got time for one activity on this list when you’re back in Byron Bay, make it either Crystal Castle & Shambhala Gardens or Julian Rocks.
They’re about as far from your first Byron Bay trip’s checklist as you can get while still capturing everything that makes this region special.
If you’ve got more time, string a few of these things to do in Byron Bay together into a proper hinterland day, Nimbin, Crystal Castle, and a distillery stop all sit within a reasonable driving loop of each other.
