This blog post is all about my luxury 1 night, 2 day Ha Long Bay cruise in Vietnam.
One of my favourite experiences during our travels around Vietnam was spending a night cruising around Ha Long Bay.
This was one of those magical, once-in-a-lifetime adventures that I almost skipped but am so glad I didnโt.
It may seem a little more on the expensive side, especially if you’re backpacking Southeast Asia like I was. But trust me, it’s worth it!
So, let me tell you everything you need to know to make this happen!
This blog post includes everything you need to know about booking a Ha Long Bay cruise in Vietnam.
What is Ha Long Bay?
Okay, so Ha Long Bay is this insanely beautiful area in northern Vietnam. Picture a bay dotted with thousands of limestone islands jutting out of emerald-green water.
The landscape is otherworldlyโitโs like natureโs version of a movie set. No wonder itโs a UNESCO World Heritage Site!
Located about 3-4 hours from Hanoi, itโs pretty easy to get to, and itโs one of those must-do experiences in Vietnam.
Whether youโre a beach bum, a culture seeker, or an adventure junkie, Ha Long Bay has something to offer everyone.

Why Should You Book A Ha Long Bay Cruise?
Imagine gliding through calm waters, surrounded by towering limestone cliffs covered in greenery, as the sunset casts everything in warm colours. Sounds amazing, right?
It is! Plus, thereโs something almost mysterious about the placeโit feels like stepping into a scene from Avatar or Pirates of the Caribbean.
Beyond the jaw-dropping views, Ha Long Bay is packed with things to do. Thereโs kayaking, exploring caves, and even visiting floating fishing villages.
Itโs that mix of natural beauty and unique experiences that makes Ha Long Bay so unforgettable.
Things to Do On A Ha Long Bay Cruise
Hereโs a quick rundown of the best things to do while youโre on a Ha Long Bay Cruise:
Kayaking Around the Islets
Most cruises include a kayaking stop where you can paddle right up to these dramatic rock formations and explore hidden lagoons.
Itโs the best way to really get up close and personal with the bayโs beauty.
Exploring Caves
Ha Long Bay is famous for its caves! The most popular is Sung Sot Cave, also known as the โSurprise Cave.โ I
tโs massive inside with stalagmites and stalactites that make the whole place look like something out of a fairytale.
Swimming or Sunbathing
Some Ha Long Bay cruises take you to secluded beaches where you can swim or just relax. Bai Chay Beach, for instance, is one of the more popular spots.
Nothing beats cooling off with a swim while surrounded by jaw-dropping scenery!
Visiting Floating Villages
Youโll get a peek into the lives of locals who live on floating villages right in the bay. These people literally live on the water, with fish farms underneath their homes!
Itโs fascinating to see this way of life.
The Overnight Ha Long Bay Cruise Experience (And Why Itโs Worth It!)
Doing an overnight Ha Long Bay cruise is an absolute must!
Youโll get to see the bay at sunset, when the crowds thin out, and itโs just you and a few other boats.
The vibe is totally different, and itโs a kind of peace and beauty thatโs hard to find anywhere else.
Whatโs Included On An Overnight Ha Long Bay Cruise?
Picture this: after a busy day of exploring, youโll be served a delicious Vietnamese dinner on board as you sail into the night.
Most cruises have comfy cabins with big windows, so you wake up with the sun rising over the islands.
In the morning, theyโll probably take you to another part of the bay for more exploring before heading back.
Why Ha Long Bay Cruise is a Luxury You Should Treat Yourself to
Even if youโre backpacking and trying to keep costs down, this is one experience thatโs worth the splurge.
Youโll sleep on board, have your meals included, and get pampered while cruising through some of the most gorgeous scenery on the planet.
Plus, with an overnight cruise, you avoid the day-tripper crowds, so it feels much more exclusive and serene.
Which Ha Long Bay Cruise Should You Book?
We booked this 1 night Ha Long Bay cruise via GetYourGuide and highly recommend it!
The company picked us up directly from our hotel in Hanoi and took us directly to the cruise in Ha Long.
Once on board, we were treated to an incredible lunch buffet, and then shown to our amazing room with the most mind-blowing views ever!
There were so many activities to partake in while on board. Including kayaking, swimming, cooking classes, tai chi classes and more.
We weren’t bored at all during our 24 hours on board, and the food was out of this world!

How to Get to the Ha Long Bay Cruise from Hanoi
Getting to Ha Long Bay from Hanoi is super easy.
Most cruises (like the one I booked with) offer pick-up services. But if not, there are a few ways to make the journey:
- Bus: This is the most budget-friendly option and takes about 3-4 hours. You can book a bus from Hanoiโs Old Quarter directly to Ha Long City.
- Private Transfer: If you want a bit more comfort, you can hire a private car or van. This is especially nice if youโre travelling with friends and want a direct trip.
- Seaplane: Feeling fancy? Thereโs actually a seaplane service that will fly you from Hanoi to Ha Long Bay. Itโs pricey, but the views from above are next-level. Plus, youโll arrive in style!
A Similar Adventure: Cat Ba Island
If youโre looking to avoid the crowds of Ha Long Bay while still enjoying its breathtaking beauty, Cat Ba Island is the perfect alternative.
Itโs the largest island in the bay area and offers a more rugged, laid-back experience, ideal for those wanting to explore nature or find a quiet spot by the sea.
Cat Ba combines stunning landscapes with adventure and relaxation, making it a fantastic destination for travellers who want a mix of activities and downtime.
How to Get to Cat Ba Island
Getting to Cat Ba is fairly straightforward, and you have a few options:
- From Ha Long Bay: Many Ha Long Bay tours offer extended trips to Cat Ba Island, making it easy to add a day or two onto your journey.
- From Hanoi: Take a bus directly from Hanoi to Cat Ba, usually via Haiphong. The journey includes a short ferry ride, and takes around 3.5-4 hours.
- Ferry from Tuan Chau Island: If youโre already in Ha Long City, ferries from Tuan Chau Island operate frequently to Cat Ba and take about an hour.
5 Things to Do on Cat Ba Island
Cat Ba has a little something for everyone, from adventurous activities to more relaxing pursuits.
Here are some top things to do while youโre there:
1. Explore Cat Ba National Park
If you love hiking, Cat Ba National Park is a must. The park covers most of the island and is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, home to diverse flora, fauna, and limestone karst formations.
The main trail leads up to Ngu Lam Peak, where youโll get panoramic views over the islandโs lush, mountainous terrain.
You might also spot the endangered Cat Ba langur monkeyโone of the rarest primates in the world!
2. Visit Lan Ha Bay
Lan Ha Bay, located south of Ha Long Bay, is a hidden gem. It shares the same stunning limestone landscapes, but is far less crowded.
From Cat Ba, you can take a boat tour through Lan Ha Bay to kayak around its quiet lagoons, explore secluded beaches, and also go snorkelling in its clear waters.
3. Go Rock Climbing
Cat Ba is famous among rock climbers for its limestone cliffs. If youโre an experienced climber, there are also challenging routes in Butterfly Valley and on the cliffs above Lan Ha Bay.
For beginners, several adventure companies on the island offer lessons and guided climbs, so you can try it out with professional gear and support.
4. Spend Time at Cat Baโs Beaches
Cat Ba has a few scenic beaches, each offering a slightly different vibe. The main beachesโCat Co 1, 2, and 3โare so close to the town and easily accessible.
Cat Co 2 is the most popular and tends to have a lively atmosphere, while Cat Co 3 is quieter and ideal for swimming and sunbathing.
5. Check Out Hospital Cave
This hidden cave is a fascinating slice of Vietnamโs war history. During the Vietnam War, Hospital Cave served as a secret, bomb-proof hospital and shelter.
The caveโs interior was converted into a three-story structure with rooms, a surgery area, and also a swimming pool. Today, you can visit it to see the remnants and also learn more about its history.
Accommodation on Cat Ba Island
One of the best parts about staying on Cat Ba is the range of accommodations, catering to every budget and travel style:
Budget-Friendly Hotels & Homestays
Cat Ba Central Homestay: A cozy and affordable homestay in the town centre. With friendly staff and basic, clean rooms also.
Cat Ba Dream Hotel: So popular among backpackers, this hotel offers great views from the rooftop and is close to the beaches.
Mid-Range Hostels & Hotels
Le Pont Bungalow Hostel: Also a great choice if you want unique, private bungalows with ocean views. Located close to Cat Co Beach.
Sea Pearl Hotel: A well-located hotel in Cat Ba Town with nice rooms, some with sea views, and amenities like a pool and a spa also.
Luxury Resorts
Cat Ba Island Resort & Spa: One of the islandโs few luxury resorts. Located right by Cat Co Beach with spacious rooms, pools, and a private beach area also.
Why Add Cat Ba to Your Itinerary?
Cat Ba is like Ha Long Bayโs best-kept secret. It has all the natural beauty youโd expect, but with a more relaxed vibe and fewer crowds.
Whether youโre looking to hike, kayak, or simply relax, Cat Ba gives you the flexibility to do it all.
Itโs perfect for adding a bit of adventure and solitude to your Vietnam travels, and since itโs relatively affordable, it wonโt break the bank!
So, if youโre heading on a Ha Long Bay cruise, consider extending your trip to include a couple of days on Cat Ba.
Itโs also one of those places thatโs easy to fall in love with. And youโll also get a richer, more diverse experience of Vietnamโs stunning coastal landscapes.

Spending 1 night, 2 days on a Ha Long Bay cruise was honestly one of the highlights of my time in Vietnam.
