How to Plan Your Travel Route Around Sri Lanka
Planning your travel route around Sri Lanka can feel overwhelming at first. There’s so much to see, from tropical beaches to ancient ruins and lush tea-covered hills.
But with a little strategy, you can easily create an itinerary that flows naturally and makes the most of your time.
Most travellers choose to either loop the island clockwise or counterclockwise, depending on the season.
If you’re visiting during the southwest monsoon (May–September), it’s best to head north and east first (e.g., Sigiriya, Trincomalee, or Arugam Bay), where the weather is drier. During the northeast monsoon (October–January), the south and west coasts (like Mirissa, Unawatuna, and Hikkaduwa) are ideal for beach days.
A common route looks something like this:
- Colombo
- Negombo
- Sigiriya
- Kandy
- Ella
- Yala National Park
- South Coast beaches (e.g., Mirissa, Weligama)
- Galle
- Colombo
This loop takes about 2–3 weeks, depending on your pace, and offers a great mix of cultural landmarks, nature, wildlife, and relaxation.
Don’t miss the iconic train journey from Kandy to Ella, often considered one of the most scenic train rides in the world.
