Colombo is well connected by road, rail, and air. The Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB) is about 30–45 minutes from the city centre (depending on traffic).

Located near the Fort Railway Station, Pettah is a buzzing maze of stalls selling everything from fruit and saris to phone chargers and fake designer gear.
It’s loud, hectic, and completely immersive. You won’t need to buy anything to enjoy it—just soak up the atmosphere.
Free to visit, though watch your belongings and prepare to haggle if you’re shopping.
2. Visit Gangaramaya Temple
One of the most iconic landmarks in Colombo, Gangaramaya Temple is a mix of Sri Lankan, Thai, Indian and Chinese architecture.
It’s more than just a temple—it’s also a museum, packed with Buddhist artefacts, statues, and oddities collected from around the world.
Located near Beira Lake, this is a peaceful spot amidst the city chaos. Entry costs around 300 LKR ($0.60), and respectful attire is required (shoulders and knees covered).
3. Stroll Along Galle Face Green
A must-do in Colombo is a sunset walk along Galle Face Green—a long, grassy strip along the coast popular with locals, especially in the evenings.

8. Visit Red Mosque (Jami Ul-Alfar)
One of the most striking buildings in the city and top things to do in Colombo, the Red Mosque is located in Pettah and features a red-and-white candy-striped façade that’s instantly recognisable.
While non-Muslims may not be able to enter during prayer times, you can still admire the architecture from outside and take in its vibrant presence in the heart of Colombo’s market district.

9. Grab Coffee at Kopi Kade or Cafe Kumbuk
Colombo has a great café scene, and two of the best are Kopi Kade and Cafe Kumbuk.
Kopi Kade offers innovative small plates and amazing coffee in a sleek, minimal setting. Cafe Kumbuk is more relaxed, with a gorgeous courtyard and top-notch brunch menu.
Ideal for escaping the midday heat or getting some remote work done if you’re travelling long-term.

10. Browse the Colombo Dutch Hospital
Don’t let the name fool you—this is a former hospital turned stylish dining and shopping precinct.
The Dutch Hospital Shopping Precinct in Fort is one of the oldest buildings in Colombo, now home to trendy bars, restaurants, and boutiques.
It’s a great place to unwind with a cold drink, have dinner or pick up a few last-minute gifts before heading home.
11. Visit Seema Malaka Temple on Beira Lake
