This blog post is all about why Koh Tao is the best island in Thailand.
I’ve had the chance to explore some of Thailand’s most popular islands, spending 3 days each on Koh Tao, Koh Samui, and Koh Phangan.
Don’t get me wrong – I enjoyed them all. But if I were to do it all over again, I’d spend all 9 days on Koh Tao, the best island in Thailand.
There’s just something about this little island that stole my heart.
This blog post is all about why Koh Tao is the best island in Thailand.
Constantly Chasing Better
That’s one of the things I both love and hate about traveling. Constantly being on the move means you sometimes stumble upon a place you never want to leave, but you’re always wondering if the next spot could be even better.
If I’d stayed stuck in one place, I might still be in Sri Lanka. But this adventurous spirit has led me to explore most of Southeast Asia, Hong Kong, Japan, and South Korea.
But yet, out of everywhere I’ve been, there’s something incredibly special about Koh Tao.

Why Koh Tao is the Best Island in Thailand
1. It’s A Diving Paradise
Koh Tao isn’t known as the “Diving Capital of Thailand” for nothing.
Whether you’re a complete beginner or a seasoned pro, this island offers some of the most affordable and breathtaking diving experiences. Imagine swimming alongside vibrant coral reefs, sea turtles, and schools of tropical fish.
With numerous diving schools offering PADI certifications, it’s no wonder Koh Tao is one of the best places in the world to dive.
2. Epic Sunsets That Will Take Your Breath Away
Sunsets in Koh Tao are something else. Head over to the west coast, grab a drink at one of the beachfront bars, and watch the sky light up with hues of pink, orange, and gold.
Trust me, you’ll want to capture this moment, so make sure your camera is fully charged!
3. A Laid-Back Vibe
Compared to its bigger siblings like Koh Samui and Koh Phangan, Koh Tao has a much more relaxed and laid-back atmosphere.
It’s the kind of place where you can kick off your shoes, wander around in flip-flops, and just let the island life wash over you.
No fancy resorts or high-rise hotels here – just cozy beach bungalows and friendly locals. Making it the best island in Thailand.

4. Adventurous Activities Beyond the Beach
Koh Tao isn’t just for divers. It’s an island packed with adventure!
You can hike up to John-Suwan Viewpoint for a jaw-dropping panoramic view, rent a scooter and explore hidden beaches, or take a kayak around the island’s stunning coastline.
Feeling extra adventurous? Try rock climbing or free diving – Koh Tao has it all. Another reason I call it the best island in Thailand.
5. Delicious Food and Coffee Everywhere You Turn
One thing that makes Koh Tao stand out is the incredible food scene. Whether you’re a foodie or just need your daily caffeine fix, the best island in Thailand has you covered.
My top recommendations are:
Gemini Dumplings: A hidden gem on the island, this cozy spot serves up the most delicious dumplings you’ll ever taste. From classic pork dumplings to spicy wontons, they’re all handmade, bursting with flavour, and perfect for a quick bite.
995 Roasted Duck: If you’re in the mood for something hearty, you have to try the roasted duck noodle soup at 995. The broth is so rich and aromatic, and the duck is perfectly tender. It’s a comforting bowl of goodness that’ll make you wish you’d discovered it sooner.
Chuchu: This spot deserves a special shoutout for their unique take on curry pizza. Yes, you read that right – curry pizza! It’s the perfect fusion of flavours, with a crispy base and a creamy curry topping that’s absolutely to die for. So if you’re feeling adventurous, it’s a must-try!
Cactus Cafe: We spent every day here for their hot mochas, great WiFi and even better view of the beach. It’s a very popular spot, so you may have to wait a little while for a table, but it’s so worth it!
Factory Cafe: This was our go-to for breakfast while in Koh Tao. Another popular and busy spot in the mornings, but they do a great shakshuka and avocado toast. A must for brunch while on the island!
The coffee shops in Koh Tao, especially around Sairee Beach, are ideal for brunch or working remotely. You’ll find everything from smoothie bowls to avocado toast, and the island vibe makes it easy to settle in for a few hours with your laptop.

If diving isn’t your thing, don’t worry – the snorkeling in Koh Tao is just as incredible.
Head to Shark Bay (don’t worry, the sharks are friendly!), Mango Bay, or Ao Leuk for crystal-clear waters and vibrant marine life.
The island’s warm waters are also perfect for floating around and discovering underwater treasures.
8. Vibrant Nightlife – If You Want It!
Koh Tao knows how to party, but it’s also got a chilled-out vibe if that’s more your speed. You can dance the night away at one of the beach bars or grab a cocktail and watch a fire show.
Alternatively, find a cozy spot on the sand, crack open a beer, and also gaze up at the stars – the choice is yours.
9. Easy to Get Around
Koh Tao might be small, but that’s part of its charm! You can explore the island on foot, by scooter, or with one of the many longtail boats.

10. The Friendly, Welcoming Community
Last but not least, it’s the people that make Koh Tao feel like a home away from home.
From the locals who greet you with a warm smile to the fellow travellers you’ll meet along the way, there’s a real sense of community here. It’s also the kind of place where you can make friends for life.
11. It’s Paradise on Earth
Koh Tao is the definition of paradise on earth. It’s the first place I’ve sat and looked out over the ocean during sunset and thought, ‘this really is paradise’.
I’ve always heard about Thailand and how beautiful it is. Don’t get me wrong, it really is. But I had never been to anywhere in Thailand and thought, wow this really is what everyone talks about.
But when I got to Koh Tao, I finally understood. I could easily spend a month or more here, living the perfect island life. Maybe in the future, eh?
Why Sairee Beach is the Best Place to Stay
If you’re planning a trip to Koh Tao, make sure to base yourself in the Sairee Beach area. It’s the island’s main hub and also has everything you need within walking distance.
You can roll out of bed, stroll to the beach, grab a coffee, or enjoy a delicious brunch – it’s all right there. Also, the sunsets from Sairee Beach are next-level.
So find a spot at one of the beachfront bars, order a cocktail, and soak in the view – you won’t be disappointed.

Where to Stay Near Sairee Beach
So, we’ve visited Koh Tao twice now and enjoyed both places we stayed on the island.
Living Chilled: This was more of a hostel-vibe and closer to Sairee Beach and the main restaurant area of Koh Tao.
Koh Tao Heritage: We stayed here on our second visit and it was located along the back roads near to Sairee Beach, so much quieter which we enjoyed. Koh Tao Heritage also has a swimming pool, where Living Chilled doesn’t.
A swimming pool isn’t a must-have in Koh Tao since the beach is right there and very calm to swim/relax in. We preferred Koh Tao Heritage due to its location and larger rooms.
