This blog post is all about things to do in Koh Tao.
Koh Tao was, without a doubt, our favourite island in the South of Thailand. If we could spend a month of our backpacking travels here to relax, we would.
However, we unfortunately only had three days to spend in Koh Tao before moving on to the islands of Koh Phangan and Koh Samui.
Looking back, we do wish we’d actually skipped on those two islands and stayed on Koh Tao instead, but we wouldn’t have known if we hadn’t visited these to islands. But at least we can now say that we’ve been, but won’t be in a rush back.
If you find yourself on the island of Koh Tao during your trip to Thailand (which we’d highly recommend), here is a list of the best things to do while you’re there.

17 Things to Do in Koh Tao, Thailand
Below are 17 must-do activities on the island of Koh Tao, in Thailand.
1. Scuba Diving
Koh Tao is one of the world’s premier diving destinations, offering crystal-clear waters and vibrant coral reefs.
Dive sites like Chumphon Pinnacle and Southwest Pinnacle teem with marine life, including whale sharks, barracudas, and colourful corals.
Numerous dive schools cater to all levels, from beginners to advanced divers.
2. Snorkelling
For those not ready to dive (like me), snorkelling is an excellent alternative.
Popular spots like Shark Bay, Aow Leuk, and Mango Bay provide easy access to incredible underwater scenes.
Renting gear is affordable, and the shallow reefs are perfect for spotting tropical fish, rays, and even small sharks. Plus we noticed the shoreline around Koh Tao was very calm with hardly any waves, so you don’t have to go far.
3. Hiking to John-Suwan Viewpoint
This hike, though challenging, rewards hikers with breathtaking views of Koh Tao’s southern coastline.
The trail winds through green jungle, leading to a viewpoint where you can see both Chalok Baan Kao and Thian Og Bays. It’s best to go early in the morning to avoid the intense Thai heat!
4. Visit Koh Nang Yuan
A short boat ride from Koh Tao, Koh Nang Yuan is a trio of small islands connected by a stunning sandbar.
The snorkelling here is exceptional, and a short hike up to the viewpoint offers a panoramic view of the sandbar and surrounding blue waters.
5. Beach Hopping
Koh Tao is home to numerous beautiful beaches, each with its own charm.
Sairee Beach is the longest and most popular, perfect for sunset views and nightlife. For a quieter experience, visit Sai Nuan Beach or Tanote Bay, known for their tranquil atmosphere and clear waters.
6. Rock Climbing
The island’s granite cliffs and boulders provide excellent rock climbing opportunities. Both beginners and experienced climbers can find suitable routes, with climbing schools offering guided tours and equipment rental.
The views from the top are stunning and well worth the effort.
7. Kayaking
Exploring Koh Tao by kayak is a peaceful way to enjoy its coastline. Paddle around the island, discovering hidden coves and isolated beaches.
Renting a kayak from one of the beaches is easy, and you can often combine it with snorkelling trips to nearby reefs.
8. Nightlife at Sairee Beach
Sairee Beach is the hub of Koh Tao’s nightlife, with a range of bars and clubs catering to different tastes. Enjoy fire shows, beach parties, and live music.
Popular spots include Fishbowl Beach Bar, AC Bar, and Maya Beach Club.
9. Visit the Koh Tao Temple (Wat Koh Tao)
This serene Buddhist temple offers a glimpse into local culture and spirituality. Located near Mae Haad, it’s a peaceful spot to explore, with beautiful statues and traditional architecture.
Remember to dress respectfully when visiting.
10. Explore the Local Cuisine
Koh Tao boasts a variety of dining options, from traditional Thai food to international cuisine. Try local specialties like pad thai, green curry, and fresh seafood.
Our favourite restaurants in Koh Tao included Chuchu Thai Food & Pizza for their curry/pizza combination (don’t knock it until you try it!), Gemini Dumplings & Noodles (I’m still thinking of the wontons I had here) and 995 Roasted Duck for some delicious duck breast and noodles.
Markets and street vendors in Mae Haad and Sairee also offer delicious and affordable meals.
11. Attend a Muay Thai Fight
Experience the excitement of Thailand’s national sport by watching a Muay Thai match. Koh Tao has several boxing stadiums where you can see both local and international fighters.
Training camps also offer lessons for those (brave souls) interested in learning the martial art.
12. Sailing Trips
Charter a sailboat and explore the waters around Koh Tao. Sailing trips often include stops at secluded bays and prime snorkelling spots.
It’s a luxurious way to experience the island and its beautiful waters.
13. Join a Cooking Class
Take a cooking class to learn how to prepare Thai dishes. Classes typically involve a market visit to pick fresh ingredients, followed by hands-on cooking under the guidance of a local chef.
It’s a very fun and educational way to immerse yourself in Thai culture.
14. Explore Mae Haad
The main port town of Koh Tao, Mae Haad, is a bustling area with shops, restaurants, and dive centres. Stroll through the streets to discover unique souvenirs, local crafts, and interesting eateries.
The town also offers a glimpse into everyday life on the island.
15. Fishing Trips
Enjoy a day out at sea with a fishing trip. Local charters provide all the necessary equipment and guidance, making it accessible for beginners.
The waters around Koh Tao are rich in fish, and you might catch snapper, grouper, or even barracuda.
16. Visit Hin Wong Bay
This secluded bay on the eastern side of Koh Tao is perfect for snorkelling and relaxation. Its rocky shoreline and clear waters are home to a variety of marine life.
It’s less crowded than other spots, offering a quieter and peaceful experience.
17. Experience a Sunset Cruise
End your day with a relaxing sunset cruise. Many operators offer trips that include drinks, snacks, and stops at scenic points around the island.
