Or, if you’re already in Thailand, you can buy tickets at any major train station.

What to Expect on the Overnight Sleeper Train
Taking the overnight sleeper train from Surat Thani to Bangkok is more than just a way to get from Surat Thani to Bangkok. It’s an experience in itself.
Here’s a breakdown of what to expect:
- Boarding: Surat Thani station is relatively small with not much around it. So bring snacks and drinks for the journey. We didn’t find many restaurants or cafes to eat from.
- Different classes: The train offers different classes, from first-class private cabins to second-class air-conditioned sleepers. Second-class is a popular choice for budget travellers (this was the carriage we chose). You’ll have a comfortable bunk bed with privacy curtains.
- Facilities: Bathrooms and wash basins are available on the train, and the staff keeps them clean throughout the journey. You can also find food and drinks for sale, but it’s always good to have your own supplies.
- Comfort: The beds are made up by the conductor with clean sheets and a pillow. You’ll likely be in a long carriage made up of lots of other bunks, with neighbours below and across from you.
How the Overnight Sleeper Train Works
The overnight sleeper train departs from Surat Thani in the evening and arrives in Bangkok early the next morning.
The journey takes approximately 10-12 hours in total.
Here’s a quick guide on how it works:
- Check-In: Arrive at Surat Thani station at least 30 minutes before departure to find your platform. You can also ask the conductor where approximately your carriage will arrive so you don’t have to rush up and down the platform when it does.
- Boarding: Show your ticket to the conductor on the train and they will show you to your bunk. Store your luggage in the designated areas.
- Relax: As the train departs, settle into your bunk, read a book, watch the scenery go by and get ready for a night’s sleep.
- Sleep: The train staff will come around to set up the beds. The rhythmic movement of the train is surprisingly soothing, helping you drift off to sleep.
- Wake Up in Bangkok: The train arrives in Bangkok early in the morning, giving you a full day to explore the city while feeling refreshed.
Why We Chose the Overnight Train
Opting to travel via the overnight train has many advantages.
It’s cost-effective, saving you a night’s accommodation, and you wake up right in the heart of Bangkok. Allowing you to make the most of your time and budget.
Plus, it’s a travel experience that you’ll remember forever.
Tips for the Journey
- Since there isn’t much around Surat Thani station, make sure to bring your own snacks and drinks.
- Bring earplugs and an eye mask if you’re a light sleeper. The train can be noisy, and the lights might stay on.
- Wear comfortable clothes and bring a light jacket, as it can get chilly at night. You will be provided with a blanket though, don’t worry.
