Welcome to the Checking In series on Orlagh Claire where I review hotel, hostel and AirBnB stays around the world. As you most likely know, I have been travelling quite a lot recently which you can see over on my YouTube channel.
Next in this series of reviews is Villa D’Uma where we stayed during our time in Ubud, Bali, Indonesia.
If you’d like to see a video tour of the villa, you can see this in my second Bali vlog over on my YouTube channel which I’ll also add in below.
I also put together a separate YouTube vlog showing the three villas I stayed in during my time in Bali which you can find here.
Location
Ubud is towards the centre of the island of Bali, so you’ll find a lot more wildlife in this area and rice fields. One of the most popular places to visit in Bali, we had a great time in this area and found lots of things to do, compared to Canggu.
Our villa was off the beaten track, where not even a car could reach. Our taxi dropped us off and then workers from the villas collected us on motorbikes and even carried our huge suitcases on the back of their bikes too.
At the top of this main road, we did have a yoga studio, breakfast locations and coffee shops and restaurants. We did have to taxi into and out of Ubud itself, but this was incredibly cheap and only around a 10 minute drive.
The cost
If you check Villa D’Uma out on booking.com you’ll see that it has a 9.2 rating, and rightly so. For our two-bedroom private villa with a pool, we paid £336 for four nights.
Between the two of us, that would be £168 each for the four nights, or £42 per night each.
Now imagine the two bedrooms were occupied by two couples/four people. You would be paying £21 each night for four nights, for a two bedroom villa in Bali. Crazy.
The villa
This villa was probably the most beautiful out of the three with a gorgeous private pool in the centre of the space. The bedrooms weren’t connected, but both had large outdoor bathrooms with an outdoor shower which was bliss.
The kitchen/dining area was completely open and outside however, which I didn’t love and we didn’t cook here at all. On one of the mornings, we had our breakfast delivered to us in the villa which was a lovely way to start our morning.
I was very conscious about wildlife/bugs in Ubud as it was a lot noisier here than in Canggu. We also saw bats flying around at nighttime and had geckos in the kitchen, but that’s to be expected in this part of the world.
Our stay
I loved the location of this villa as it was very much off the main road and down little winding alleyways with other hotel complexes, massage parlours, shops and local Balinese.
It always felt like a relaxing place to return to each day and somewhere that you could enjoy peace and quiet in the middle of the outdoors.
Overall review
I would definitely recommend this villa when visiting Bali. We did have to walk to the main road each time we wanted to head out into the main area, but I guess this would be a good place to rent a motorbike. Although the workers were always on hand if you wanted a lift to the main road.
Ubud was definitely a busier area than Canggu with a lot more cars on the road, a lot more shops and main streets and thankfully areas we could walk with actual footpaths.
I feel like we also ate a lot more Balinese food in Ubud compared to Canggu which was more Westernised. All in all, I would highly recommend a visit to Ubud and check out these villas if you do.
You can book a stay at Villa D’Uma here.
