This blog post is all about the Gamcheon Busan Culture Village.

When we were traveling through South Korea, visiting Busan was one of the highlights of our trip.
It’s a city that feels alive with culture, stunning coastal views, and an undeniable energy.
One of the places I couldn’t wait to visit was Gamcheon Culture Village. A colourful hillside neighbourhood that’s part art installation, part living community, and 100% unforgettable.
We went on what was possibly the hottest day of the year (South Korean summers are no joke!), so let me tell you, navigating all the stairs and hills was a workout.
But even with the heat, Gamcheon was absolutely worth every step, and I hope it’s a little cooler for you when you visit!
Here’s everything you need to know about Gamcheon Culture Village, why it’s a must-see, and how to make the most of your visit.
This blog post is all about visiting the Busan Culture Village.
What is Gamcheon Culture Village?
Gamcheon Culture Village is one of Busan’s most iconic and unique attractions, often called the “Machu Picchu of Busan.”
While its brightly painted houses and winding alleyways may seem like something out of a fairytale today, the village has a rich and complex history that makes it even more fascinating.
The village was established in the 1950s during the Korean War when refugees fled to Busan, then South Korea’s temporary capital. Many settled on this barren hillside, building simple, terraced homes. The community, rooted in the religious movement Taegukdo, was close-knit but struggled with poverty for decades.
In 2009, Gamcheon underwent a dramatic transformation as part of a government-led revitalization project.

Local artists and residents worked together to turn the village into an open-air gallery, painting homes in pastel colours and adding murals, sculptures, and creative spaces.
The project not only beautified Gamcheon but also revitalized the community, drawing tourists from around the world.
Today, Gamcheon Culture Village is a blend of history, art, and daily life. It’s a place where creativity meets resilience, offering visitors a unique glimpse into Busan’s past and its vibrant present.

How to Get to Gamcheon Busan Culture Village
Getting to the Busan Culture Village is fairly easy but does involve a bit of effort.
By Subway:
Take Line 1 (Orange Line) to Toseong Station. Exit through Gate 6 and follow signs for the village. It’s about a 20-25 minute uphill walk from the station.
By Bus:
This was the route we took to get to Busan Culture Village and found it very easy!
From Toseong Station, catch Bus 1-1, 2, or 2-2, which will drop you closer to the entrance of the village.
While the bus saves you some uphill walking, I’d recommend comfortable shoes regardless. You’ll be climbing a lot of stairs and exploring steep paths once you’re inside the village!
Remember to top up your T-Card before! If you are unsure on how to use public transport in South Korea then make sure to read my upcoming blog explaining this in detail.
What to See and Do in Gamcheon Busan Culture Village
Below are the top things to see and do in the Busan Culture Village. Take a look at GetYourGuide activities in the Gamcheon Culture Village here.
1. Flip Book Studio
Forget just in Busan, this might be one of my favourite activities from all my travels around Asia!
At Flip Book Studio, you get to create your very own animated flip book to take home as a one-of-a-kind souvenir. It’s such a fun and interactive experience that’ll have you laughing the entire time.
Here’s how it works: you step in front of a camera, and over 15 seconds, it snaps a series of photos that are then printed into a flip book.
The best part? They have props, outfits, and plenty of space to get creative. You can pose, run around, jump off-screen, whatever you like! The result is a quirky, personalized keepsake that perfectly captures the fun of your visit to Gamcheon.
Trust me, if you’re looking for a unique and memorable activity, this one’s hard to beat!
2. The Little Prince and Fox Statue
You’ll definitely want to make your way to the famous Little Prince and Fox statue, perched on a ledge overlooking the colourful houses. Inspired by the beloved French book, this spot is one of the most photographed places in the village.
I’ll be honest I had never heard of this story before we saw the statue and there was a massive queue for a photo. But the view behind the statue is the perfect backdrop, so make sure you catch a quick photo here.
3. Coffee at The Blue House on the Stairs
If all that walking has you needing a break (trust me, it will), stop by The Blue House on the Stairs for a coffee.
Here you order a coffee from the machine outside and all of a sudden your coffee comes down from a window in a hot air balloon!
Very unique experience and also the coffee was pretty good as well.
4. The View from Coffee It House
Another must-visit cafe is Coffee It House, which offers incredible panoramic views of the village and beyond.
Grab a window seat and soak in the scenery while sipping on a refreshing drink. It’s the perfect place to catch your breath and take in the beauty of Gamcheon from above.
5. Explore the Street Art and Murals
The real magic of Gamcheon lies in wandering its streets.
Every alley holds a new surprise. Vivid murals, playful sculptures, and quirky installations that tell the story of the village.
Some highlights include fish made from recycled materials and colourful staircases that look like rainbows.
6. Shop for Local Crafts
Many of the shops in Gamcheon sell handmade goods, from jewellery to postcards and also pottery.
Picking up a few items is a great way to support local artists and also take a piece of Gamcheon’s creativity home with you.
7. Gamcheon Culture Village Stamp Trail
If you’re up for a bit of a scavenger hunt, grab a stamp map at the village entrance. As you explore, you’ll find stamp stations at key spots around the village.
Collecting all the stamps is a fun way to make sure you don’t miss any of the highlights.
