This blog post is all about the Hungry Lion Resort in Sigiriya.

Welcome to the Checking In series on Orlagh Claire where I review my stay in hotels, hostels, guest house and AirBnBs around the world. As you most likely know, I have been travelling quite a lot recently which you can see over on my YouTube channel.
Next in this series of reviews is Hungry Lion Resort, Sigiriya which was our accommodation for exploring the area and hiking Pidurangula Rock.
You can see a video tour of our hotel room at the Hungry Lion Resort in my Sigiriya YouTube vlog below:

Top tip: for mobile data around Sri Lanka, we used the Airalo eSim. This was super handy and easily installed onto our phones as soon as we landed in Colombo!
Location of Hungry Lion Resort
We were in Sigiriya for two nights, mainly to climb Pidurangula Rock. The main attraction/hike here is of course, Lion Rock, but Pidurangula is actually much cheaper plus you get to see Lion Rock from the top of Pidurangula, so makes for great pictures.
I would say the Hungry Lion Resort is the ideal spot if you want to climb Lion Rock as the entrance is across the road.
For us, we had to get a tuk tuk to Pidurangula Rock at 5am anyway. But it was also a ten minute walk to the main area of restaurants and cafes.
There didn’t seem to be much in Sigiriya other than hostels, guest houses and a few restaurants all located in one cluster.
Cost to Stay at Hungry Lion Resort Guest House
For our two night stay at Hungry Lion Resort, with breakfast, this cost £36.03. So, splitting that up, cost £18.02 per night.
And if we break it down even further into cost per person, it was £9 per person, per night. This was also a triple room, so could have been split three-ways if there was a third person.
A great cheap option for such a spacious room in very close proximity to Sigiriya Rock.
Our Stay at Hungry Lion Resort Guest House
I would say that this wasn’t my favourite place to stay during our time in Sri Lanka. It was always quite eerily quiet with no one around any time we came and went.
On our second night, we didn’t sleep very well as it sounded like there were animals in the room with us, but we think it was chipmunks or monkeys running back and forth across the tin roof all night.
The room was large and spacious. But there were bugs, spiders and geckos in the bathroom and bedroom which I didn’t love.

Overall Review of Hungry Lion Resort in Sigiriya
For the price, we couldn’t fault it. But I think I would maybe look elsewhere if I was to come back to Sigiriya again.
The breakfast on our final morning was great and plentiful. Plus the owner was helpful with booking tuk tuks for us. However, because the PickMe app isn’t available and it’s not as easy to flag them down, the prices are slightly inflated in the area.
You can book a stay at Hungry Lion Resort guest house here.
