Hanoi is a city that completely captured my heart. As Vietnam’s vibrant capital, it’s a bustling mix of history, culture, and there’s so many unique things to do in Hanoi.
From the moment we arrived, I was enchanted by its charm—the tangled streets of the Old Quarter, the scent of street food wafting through the air, and the way ancient traditions coexist with modern city life. It’s chaotic, beautiful, and somehow calming all at the same time.
We originally planned to spend just a few days in Hanoi, but bad weather cancelled our trip to the Ha Giang Loop, and we ended up staying for nearly two weeks.
Honestly, I’m so glad we did. The longer I stayed, the more I fell in love with the city’s quirks, its incredible food scene, and the many unique things to do in Hanoi.
If I could redo my trip, I’d swap the few nights we spent in Ninh Binh for more time in Hanoi (and just visit Ninh Binh as a day trip instead).

Here are 13 amazing and unique things to do in Hanoi to help you plan your trip—and maybe even inspire you to stay a little longer.
1. Explore Hanoi’s Old Quarter
If there’s one thing you have to do in Hanoi, it’s wandering through the Old Quarter. This area is the beating heart of the city and honestly one of the best places to just get lost and soak up the vibe.
Each street feels like it has its own personality—some are packed with shops selling everything from silk scarves to random trinkets, while others are all about the food (my favourite, obviously).
Walking around, you’ll hear the buzz of motorbikes, see street vendors balancing baskets full of fruit, and smell the incredible aroma of pho and bun cha being cooked up on every corner.
I spent hours here just wandering, stopping to grab snacks or check out quirky little shops. I didn’t really have a plan, and that’s kind of the point. You never know what you’ll stumble across—one minute, you’re looking at souvenirs, and the next, you’re sitting at a tiny roadside cafe with an iced coffee, watching the world go by.
If you can, try to go both during the day and at night. In the daytime, the Old Quarter is buzzing with markets and shops, but at night, it transforms into this neon-lit wonderland with music, street food, and plenty of places to grab a drink. While it’s probably not one of the most unique things to do in Hanoi, it’s definitely one of the must-do’s!

2. Catch the Thrill of Hanoi Train Street
If you’re in Hanoi, then you’ll 100% want to see Hanoi Train Street—it’s such a bucket list item and one of the most unique things to do in Hanoi and Asia! The thrill of standing just inches from a passing train while sipping coffee at one of the street-side cafes is an experience you won’t forget.
It’s chaotic, exciting, and just so unique to Hanoi.
Now, I’ll be honest—it’s not as simple as just rocking up and expecting to see a train go by. Some minor planning is definitely required.
The trains don’t run all the time, so you’ll want to check the schedule in advance to make sure you don’t miss it. When the trains do come through, the energy is electric as locals and visitors scramble to clear the tracks in time.
It’s also worth noting that the area can feel a bit hectic. Café owners are all competing to get you into their spot, and technically, access to the street is restricted (which makes zero sense, considering its rammed with people).

3. Relax at Hoàn Kiếm Lake and Ngoc Son Temple
Hoàn Kiếm Lake is like Hanoi’s peaceful little oasis in the middle of all the city chaos. Whether you’re looking for a place to stretch your legs, escape the motorbike madness, or just soak up the local vibe, this spot is perfect for one of the most unique things to do in Hanoi in the morning.
The lake is surrounded by a scenic walking path, making it ideal for a leisurely stroll.
One of the highlights is the Ngoc Son Temple, which sits on a small island in the lake. You’ll cross the beautiful red Huc Bridge to get there, which is an iconic photo spot in itself. The temple is small but full of history and charm, and the views from the island back across the lake are lovely.
If you’re up early, head to the lake in the morning. You’ll find locals practicing tai chi, exercising, or just enjoying the cool morning air—it’s such a peaceful way to start the day.
Whether you go in the morning or later in the day, Hoàn Kiếm Lake is one of those places that feels like the calm centre of the storm in Hanoi, and it’s an absolute must-visit.
4. Admire St. Joseph’s Cathedral
St. Joseph’s Cathedral is one of those attractions in Hanoi that you just have to see—it’s absolutely stunning.
With its towering neo-Gothic spires, intricate details, and weathered façade, it immediately gave me serious Notre Dame vibes. Built in the late 19th century during French colonial rule, it’s a beautiful reminder of Hanoi’s history and a striking contrast to the surrounding cityscape.
What I loved most about visiting was how peaceful the area felt, even though it’s right in the heart of the bustling city. The small square in front of the cathedral is perfect for people-watching, and the nearby streets are lined with charming cafes.
I grabbed a Vietnamese iced coffee from one of the cafes nearby and just sat for a while, soaking in the view—it was such a nice moment to slow down and take it all in at one of the unique things to do in Hanoi.
If you’re exploring Hanoi’s Old Quarter, St. Joseph’s Cathedral is super easy to include in your itinerary, and it’s well worth the visit.
5. Take a Food Tour or Try Street Food
Hanoi’s food scene is legendary, and trust me, you’ll want to dive straight in. From the fragrant bowls of pho to the sizzling pork and noodles of bun cha, the city is packed with incredible flavours just waiting to be discovered.

The temple is full of symbolism and history, making it not just a pretty spot but also a fascinating one. It’s a great place to escape the hustle and bustle of Hanoi for a while and reflect on the city’s incredible history.

7. Explore the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum and Complex
Visiting the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum and its surrounding complex is an essential Hanoi experience. This is where you’ll find the final resting place of Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam’s beloved revolutionary leader who played a key role in the country’s path to independence.
The mausoleum itself is an imposing structure, guarded by soldiers and surrounded by well-manicured gardens. Seeing the embalmed body of Ho Chi Minh lying in state is a solemn experience, but it’s one that gives you a deep appreciation for how much he is revered in Vietnam.
The larger Ho Chi Minh Complex is also worth exploring while you’re there. You’ll find the Presidential Palace, an impressive yellow colonial-style building where Ho Chi Minh worked, though he chose not to live there.
Instead, you can visit his humble stilt house, which offers a fascinating insight into his modest lifestyle and values. The One Pillar Pagoda, a small yet iconic Buddhist structure resembling a lotus blossom, is another highlight in the complex.
For history lovers, this is a must-see, but even if you’re not, the insight it offers into Vietnam’s modern history makes it well worth a visit.

8. Check Out the Imperial Citadel of Thăng Long

It’s a relatively quick stop but worth a visit, especially if you’re exploring the Old Quarter nearby.

Known as the “Hanoi Hilton” during the Vietnam War, Hoa Lo Prison offers a sobering look at the country’s history.
The museum focuses on the prison’s use during French colonial rule and its role during the Vietnam War.
It’s an emotional but insightful experience, providing a deeper understanding of Vietnam’s past struggles.
11. Experience Hanoi’s Nightlife on Tạ Hiện Street
Known as “Beer Street,” Tạ Hiện Street is the place to be for Hanoi’s vibrant nightlife.
By day, it’s relatively quiet, but after sunset, it comes alive with locals and travellers enjoying cold beers, street food, and live music.
The energy is infectious, and it’s a fantastic place to mingle and soak up the atmosphere. This is one of the best and most unique things to do in Hanoi at night.
12. Watch a Show at Thang Long Water Puppet Theater
One of the most unique things to do in Hanoi and your trip to Hanoi wouldn’t be complete without experiencing a traditional water puppet show.
This unique art form originated in northern Vietnam and features colourful puppets performing on a water stage, accompanied by live music and storytelling.

13. Day Trip to Ninh Binh or Ha Long Bay
If you’re visiting Hanoi, you absolutely have to make time for Ha Long Bay and Ninh Binh—two of the most stunning places in Vietnam, each offering a completely different experience.
We went on a 2-day, 1-night boat trip to Ha Long Bay, and let me tell you, it was one of the most unique things to do in Hanoi. Cruising through the emerald waters surrounded by towering limestone karsts felt like stepping into another world.
Ha Long Bay is a proper wonder of the world, and if you’re considering whether or not to go, let this be your sign—make sure you do this! There are lots of tour options to fit all budgets, so whether you’re splurging on a luxury cruise or going for something more budget-friendly, it’s worth every penny.
Before arriving in Hanoi, we also spent a few nights in Ninh Binh, and it completely blew us away. Known as “Ha Long Bay on land,” it’s a place where rivers wind through lush green landscapes dotted with karst mountains.
If you’re pressed for time, Ninh Binh can easily be done as a long day trip from Hanoi, but I’d recommend staying for at least one night if you can.
Both Ha Long Bay and Ninh Binh offer such unforgettable experiences, are both unique things to do in Hanoi, and visiting either (or both!) will make your Hanoi trip even more incredible.
