best things to do in kuala lumpur

I recently spent 2 days in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. With only two days to see and do everything, I managed to pack quite a lot into a very tight schedule.

As the capital city of Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur offers such a mix of things to do. Whether you’re travelling with kids, as a couple or even solo travelling, Kuala Lumpur offers something that will suit you perfectly.

I love that there’s so much culture to experience in Kuala Lumpur and don’t even get me started on the food. Let’s just say we ate very well in Kuala Lumpur and it’s the top reason I can’t wait to go back some day.

Kuala Lumpur was a quick stop for us on our way to Thailand as we were about to embark our biggest travel period yet.

After spending a month in Thailand, we visited Cambodia, Vietnam and Laos before making our way back into the North of Thailand.

The Best Things to Do in Kuala Lumpur

From the iconic Petronas Towers to bustling street food markets and tranquil gardens, here are the best things to do in Kuala Lumpur, including top attractions for couples, families, solo and budget travellers.

1. Symphony Lake Water Show

Right at the base of the Petronas Towers, youโ€™ll find one of the best things to do in Kuala Lumpur for free, the Symphony Lake Water Show.

Every evening, the fountains dance to music and lights in a mesmerising display thatโ€™s surprisingly grand for a free attraction.

Itโ€™s a bit like the Bellagio Fountains in Las Vegas or Dubaiโ€™s Burj Khalifa show, just on a smaller (and more intimate) scale.

The best time to catch it is after sunset when the lights come alive against the backdrop of the illuminated towers. Itโ€™s incredibly romantic for couples and great fun for kids too.

Tip: Arrive early to grab a seat near the water or view it from the Skybridge area for a perfect photo spot.

2. Petaling Street, Kuala Lumpur

If you love night markets, street food, and haggling for bargains, Petaling Street is where you need to be.

This area, the heart of Kuala Lumpurโ€™s Chinatown, comes alive after dark with stalls selling everything from imitation designer goods to handmade trinkets.

But the real highlight? The food.

We dined here every day, eating fresh dumplings, sizzling noodles, and seafood straight from the wok. Itโ€™s one of the best things to do in Kuala Lumpur at night and a true feast for your senses.

Donโ€™t miss: Kim Lian Kee for Hokkien mee, and Air Mata Kucing, a famous herbal drink stall loved by locals.

A visit to the Batu Caves is one of the top attractions in Kuala Lumpur, and a must on any KL itinerary.

Climb the 272 rainbow-coloured steps (best done early morning before the heat kicks in) and youโ€™ll be rewarded with sweeping views and a spiritual atmosphere.

This is one of the best things to do in Kuala Lumpur with kids, too as theyโ€™ll love the cheeky monkeys!

Tip: Dress modestly (cover knees and shoulders) as this is a place of worship and you’ll be charged a high price to buy a cover-up there. Don’t get caught out like I did!
