This article is all about the best restaurants and where to eat Christmas Day dinner in New York City.

christmas day dinner in new york

Spending Christmas in New York City is one of those bucket-list experiences that feels straight out of a movie.

The lights are still twinkling, Fifth Avenue is glowing, and despite the cityโ€™s reputation for never sleeping, Christmas Day in New York has a noticeably calmer, more reflective energy.

One of the biggest questions visitors ask every year, though, is this: where do you actually eat on Christmas Day in NYC?

I’ve spent three Christmas Days in New York City and am about to spend my fourth Christmas Day there this year, in 2026.

Last year in 2025, we decided to spend our first hot Christmas in Sydney, Australia after moving here in February 2025. On December 1st, I knew I had made a grave mistake and didn’t feel the Christmas spirit at all in 2025.

There truly is nowhere like New York at Christmas and I made sure to book for Christmas 2026 and unfortunately (for my bank account), I think I’ll have to spend every Christmas in New York City.

This is my guide to where to eat Christmas Day dinner in New York, including three restaurants I’ve dined at and others that are highly recommended.

What is Christmas Day Like in New York?

Before we talk food, itโ€™s worth setting expectations.

Christmas Day in New York is quieter, but not closed. Public transport runs on a reduced schedule, tourist attractions are limited, and the streets feel calmer, especially in the morning.

New York is home to people of countless religions, cultures, and traditions. While Christmas is widely celebrated, it isnโ€™t universal, which means many businesses, especially restaurants, remain open.

This diversity is what makes eating on Christmas Day in New York City so interesting. You can enjoy a classic roast turkey at lunchtime, dumplings in Chinatown by afternoon, and pizza or cocktails by evening.

If you want the full festive experience, I recommend pairing a long Christmas Day lunch or dinner with a walk through Central Park, Dyker Heights, or the Fifth Avenue lights.

Where to Have A Traditional Christmas Day Dinner in New York

For many visitors, a truly traditional Christmas Day dinner in New York involves turkey, stuffing, gravy, mashed potatoes, vegetables, and maybe a slice of pumpkin or pecan pie to finish.

Restaurants that offer this often have festive decorations, holiday menus, and a celebratory atmosphere that feels like a special occasion meal.

Here are some of the best:

1. The Churchill Tavern: My Top Pick

Address: East 28th Street, Manhattan, New York

If you want atmosphere and authenticity, The Churchill Tavern is my go-to recommendation for Christmas Day dinner in New York.

Iโ€™ve eaten here on Christmas Day myself and for Thanksgiving, and it feels like the perfect blend of festive comfort and NYC charm.

Why the The Churchill is Perfect for Christmas Day Dinner in New York:

  • The dรฉcor is cosy, wood-accented, and feels like a Europe-meets-Manhattan holiday pub

  • Often features holiday music and decorations that feel intimate rather than loud
  • Friendly service that doesnโ€™t make you feel rushed even when itโ€™s busy

3. Connollyโ€™s Irish Pub: Classic Christmas Comfort

Address: West 45th Street, Times Square, Manhattan, New York

Connollyโ€™s Pub is a lively pub that transforms into a cheerful holiday hub on Christmas Day.

Non-Traditional Places to Eat Christmas Day in NYC

Not everyone wants turkey on Christmas, and New York is one of the few cities in the world where you can happily chase dumplings, pizza, tacos, or noodles on December 25th and feel like youโ€™re celebrating, not settling.

Here are great options that often stay open on Christmas Day:

1. Chinatown & Dumplings

New Yorkโ€™s Chinatown is famously bustling on Christmas.

Many traditional Chinese restaurants stay open, serving dumplings, noodles and dim sum, which has become something of a local tradition on a day when so many western restaurants are closed.

A reminder that Christmas in NYC is as culturally diverse as the city itself.
