This blog post is all about the best free things to do in New York this December.
Christmas in New York is my absolute favourite time of the year.
There’s just something magical about the city during the holidays—the lights, the festive spirit, the crisp winter air.
I always try to spend the holiday season there because it truly feels like stepping into a movie.
But let’s face it—New York City is notoriously expensive, especially during December.
Between holiday shopping, dining out, and attending events, costs can quickly add up. Thankfully, there are plenty of amazing things to do in NYC that won’t cost you a cent.
So here’s a list of the best free things to do in New York to make your December trip unforgettable.
This blog post is all about the best free things to do in New York.
The Best Free Things to Do in New York this December
If you didn’t know, a few years ago I spent 12 months living in New York and it was the best year of my life.
I was on an interns salary, so was constantly looking for cheap or free things to do in New York. As well as cheap places to eat.

I’m gutted that I didn’t start my travel YouTube channel until after my year in New York, but I have been back on a few occasions since and vlogged my time there.
You can watch my most recent visit to New York at Christmas in the vlog below. Make sure to subscribe as there may be another Christmas in New York video coming up really soon!
For now, enjoy this list below of the top free things to do in New York this December.
1. See the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree
My top recommendation of free things to do in New York this December! No holiday season in NYC is complete without a visit to the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree.
Towering above the plaza, this iconic tree is adorned with thousands of twinkling lights and crowned with a Swarovski crystal star. It’s free to admire and a perfect spot for holiday photos.
Pro Tip: Visit late at night or early in the morning to avoid the heaviest crowds. While you’re there, don’t miss the other festive decorations around Rockefeller Plaza.

2. Watch the Fifth Avenue Holiday Window Displays
Fifth Avenue transforms into a holiday wonderland in December, with department stores competing to create the most extravagant window displays.
Stores like Saks Fifth Avenue, Bergdorf Goodman, and Macy’s showcase elaborate, magical scenes that often incorporate moving figures and stunning lights.
The best part? It’s completely free to wander along Fifth Avenue and soak in the festive creativity.
For an extra treat, catch the Saks Fifth Avenue Light Show, a dazzling spectacle of music and lights on the store’s façade. Although, rumour has it that it might not be happening this year due to budget cuts…
3. Explore Bryant Park Winter Village
Bryant Park’s Winter Village is a hub of holiday cheer in Midtown Manhattan. While shopping or ice skating might cost you, walking through the charming market stalls and soaking in the festive atmosphere is free.
The rink is surrounded by holiday lights and a giant Christmas tree, making it a picture-perfect spot.
Even if you don’t skate, grab a seat on one of the park benches and enjoy the holiday spirit. Performances and live music often take place, adding to the festive vibe.

4. Visit the Wall Street Christmas Tree
The Wall Street Christmas Tree is a lesser-known but equally beautiful holiday landmark. Located outside the New York Stock Exchange, this tree is often less crowded than Rockefeller’s, making it a great alternative if you want to avoid the hustle and bustle.
While you’re downtown, take a stroll through the Financial District to enjoy its historic charm, and head over to the nearby One World Trade Center for stunning views of the city.

One of the best free things to do in New York in December and year-round, but there’s a special magic to it in December. A leisurely walk through its snow-dusted paths can be just what you need to escape the city’s chaos.
Highlights include:
- Bethesda Terrace and Fountain: A romantic and also serene spot.
- The Mall: A picturesque promenade lined with trees that look magical in winter.
- Bow Bridge: Perfect for views and photos.
So bring a mug (takeaway cup) of hot cocoa and take in the peaceful atmosphere.
6. Discover the Dyker Heights Christmas Lights
Head to Brooklyn’s Dyker Heights to witness one of the most extravagant holiday light displays in the city. This neighbourhood is famous for its residents going all-out with their decorations—think giant inflatables, animatronic displays, and also thousands of sparkling lights.
Walking around Dyker Heights is completely free, though some visitors leave tips or donations for charity.
For the best experience, visit after dark when all the lights are on full display.

Create your own walking route through areas like:
- 5th Avenue: Famous for its store displays and decorations.

The New York Public Library at Bryant Park is not only a stunning landmark but also a peaceful retreat from the holiday chaos. During December, the library often features seasonal displays and exhibits.
Entry is free, and the grand halls and architecture are worth exploring, even if you don’t plan to borrow a book.
12. Explore the High Line
While not overtly Christmas-themed, the High Line offers a unique perspective of the city, especially in winter.
This elevated park is quieter in December, allowing you to enjoy the views and occasional holiday decorations scattered along the path.
Bundle up, and take a leisurely walk to soak in the crisp air and urban scenery.
13. Take the Staten Island Ferry
For stunning (and free!) views of the Statue of Liberty and the Manhattan skyline, hop on the Staten Island Ferry.
While it’s not Christmas-specific, the ferry ride offers a peaceful escape from the holiday crowds and provides amazing photo opportunities.
14. Visit the Grand Central Terminal Holiday Fair
Grand Central Terminal is a historic New York landmark that becomes even more magical during December.
While the Holiday Fair features items for sale, wandering through the terminal and admiring its decorations and architecture is completely free.
Don’t forget to look up and marvel at the stunning ceiling mural, which depicts constellations.
15. Catch a Free Performance at Washington Square Park
Washington Square Park comes alive during the holidays with free performances and carollers.
The park’s iconic arch and Christmas tree create a festive backdrop for enjoying some music or simply people-watching.
16. Visit a Local Church for Midnight Mass or Services
Many historic churches in New York host free holiday services, and even if you’re not religious, attending can be a beautiful cultural experience.
The music, candles, and peaceful atmosphere are also a lovely way to embrace the holiday spirit.
