This blog post is all about a Sigiriya Travel Guide.

Where is Sigiriya?

Sigiriya is located in the Central Province of Sri Lanka, around 170km northeast of Colombo.

It’s tucked between Dambulla and Habarana, making it part of Sri Lanka’s famed Cultural Triangle.

Despite being a bit remote, it’s one of the most visited destinations in the country. And for good reason!

You can see everything we got up to during our time in Sigiriya in my Sigiriya travel guide vlog over on YouTube! It shows how we got to Sigiriya from Negombo, where we stayed, everywhere we ate and everything you need to know about climbing Pidurangula Rock:

What is Sigiriya Famous For?

Sigiriya is best known for Lion Rock – an enormous rock fortress rising nearly 200 metres above the jungle.

Often referred to as the “Eighth Wonder of the World,” this ancient stronghold was once home to King Kashyapa’s royal palace. Today, it’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site that draws travellers from all over the globe.

Beyond Lion Rock, Sigiriya also offers lush landscapes, incredible views, ancient ruins, cave temples, and even nearby safaris.

Whether you’re chasing sunrises or spotting elephants, it’s a memorable stop on any Sri Lanka itinerary.

Sigiriya Travel Guide: How to Get to Sigiriya

Despite its popularity, Sigiriya isn’t the easiest place to get to.

Most travellers arrive via the nearby town of Dambulla, which is well-connected by bus routes from Kandy, Colombo, and other major cities. From Dambulla, it’s about a 30-minute tuk tuk ride to Sigiriya.

While buses do pass directly through Sigiriya, the schedules are unpredictable. We opted for a tuk tuk from Dambulla, which made life much easier and meant we didn’t lose any time waiting around.

If you’re planning your route in advance, I highly recommend booking transport through 12Go Asia for convenience and reliability — especially during high season.

Sigiriya Travel Guide: Your 48-Hour Sigiriya Itinerary

Here’s how to spend two days in Sigiriya and make every moment count in this Sigiriya travel guide.

Sigiriya Travel Guide Day One: Arrival, Exploration and Sunset Views

Morning:

  • Arrive in Sigiriya and check into your guesthouse or hotel. We stayed at Hungry Lion Resort, which was budget-friendly, within walking distance to restaurants, and had helpful hosts who arranged our sunrise tuk tuk.
  • Grab a local lunch at Pradeep Restaurant or Wijesiri Family Restaurant – both serve authentic Sri Lankan curries and rice.

Afternoon:

  • Head to the Sigiriya Museum for a quick but insightful overview of the area’s history. It’s a great way to understand what you’ll be seeing later at the rock itself.
  • Spend the late afternoon exploring the surrounding village, spotting monkeys, water buffalo and admiring the views.

Evening:

  • Walk or tuk tuk to Pidurangala Rock for sunset views. This lesser-known sibling to Lion Rock is cheaper ($3 vs $30) and gives you the view of Lion Rock, which, in my opinion, is even better.
  • The climb up Pidurangala requires a bit of scrambling near the top, especially in the last 15 minutes, but it’s absolutely worth it.
  • Finish the day with a cold Lion beer and a relaxed dinner at your accommodation or local restaurant.

Sigiriya Travel Guide Day Two: Lion Rock and Cultural Highlights

Morning:

  • If you skipped Pidurangala the night before, now’s the time for a sunrise hike.
  • Otherwise, it’s time for the main event: climbing Sigiriya Rock.
  • It’s best to start as early as possible (gates open around 7am) to avoid the scorching midday sun. Even at 5am, you’ll be sweating.
  • Entry is steep at $30, but the panoramic views from the top and the experience of wandering through royal palace ruins are priceless.

Late Morning:

  • Refuel at Barista — Sri Lanka’s biggest coffee chain, where you’ll find air con, iced coffee and strong WiFi (a rare combo in Sigiriya!).

Afternoon:

  • Take a short trip to Dambulla Cave Temple, another UNESCO site. The temple complex is made up of five caves filled with Buddhist murals and statues, set into a dramatic rock face.
  • Return to Sigiriya for a late lunch and a stroll through local shops or enjoy a nap in the heat of the afternoon.

Evening:

  • Optional second sunset (we wouldn’t blame you if you do Pidurangala again).
  • Wrap up your visit with a final Sri Lankan meal and get ready for your next stop. For us, we left Sigiriya for one night in Pinnawala.

Pidurangala Rock vs Lion Rock: Which One Should You Hike?

If you’re heading to Sigiriya, there’s a big decision to make: should you climb Sigiriya Rock (Lion Rock) or Pidurangala Rock?

While both offer stunning views and unforgettable experiences, they’re actually very different, in terms of price, difficulty, and what you’ll get out of the climb.

Here’s a breakdown of the two hikes and which one might suit you better:

Sigiriya Rock (Lion Rock)

Climbing Sigiriya Rock is the most iconic experience in the area. It’s the main reason many travellers come to Sigiriya in the first place.

The towering rock, once the site of King Kashyapa’s royal palace, is steeped in ancient history.

Along the way to the summit, you’ll pass through water gardens, the famous mirror wall, and eventually the lion paw gate, which once led to a huge lion-shaped entrance.

What to expect at Sigiriya Rock:

  • A well-maintained path with stairs built into the rock.
  • Crowds, especially during peak season.
  • An entrance fee of around $30 USD for foreigners.
  • Sweeping views from the top and access to the palace ruins.

The climb can feel intense, especially in the heat, and those with a fear of heights may find the staircases a little daunting.

Pidurangala Rock

Pidurangala Rock sits just a few minutes away from Sigiriya Rock and offers arguably the best view of Lion Rock.

That’s right, from Pidurangala, you can look directly across at the famous fortress perched in the distance. And for some travellers, that view is actually more impressive.

We decided to climb Pidurangala at sunrise, and it was one of the highlights of our time in Sri Lanka.

Although it doesn’t have the ancient ruins, it does have a fascinating history of its own, starting with a Buddhist temple at the base and a reclining Buddha statue halfway up.

What to expect at Pidurangala Rock:

The last part of the hike is more challenging than Lion Rock, with a bit of climbing required.

But the reward? A wide-open rock summit where you can sit for ages watching the mist roll over the jungle.

Sigiriya Travel Guide: So Which Should You Choose?

If you’re short on time or trying to stick to a budget, Pidurangala Rock is the clear winner. It’s cheaper, quieter, and the view of Lion Rock makes for the perfect photo.

If you’re interested in history, archaeology, and don’t mind the crowds, Sigiriya Rock is a once-in-a-lifetime experience that delivers on all fronts. Especially if you’re willing to pay the price and climb early in the day.

Got time for both? Many travellers (especially those staying more than one night) climb one rock at sunrise and the other at sunset. If that’s an option for you, it’s well worth doing both.

But if you can only pick one, we’d say: go for Pidurangala. Especially if you want that iconic photo of Sigiriya Rock rising from the jungle.

Sigiriya Travel Guide: Where to Stay in Sigiriya

Accommodation in Sigiriya mainly lines the main road, offering a mix of guesthouses, hostels, and small hotels.

We stayed at Hungry Lion Resort, which was affordable, friendly and arranged our 5am tuk tuk to Pidurangala Rock. It wasn’t luxurious, but it had everything we needed for two nights.

Sigiriya Travel Guide: Where to Eat in Sigiriya

Sigiriya has a surprising number of decent food options for such a small area.

  • Wijesiri Family Restaurant – Cosy and casual with generous portions and homemade food.
  • Pradeep Restaurant – Our go-to for lunch and dinner. Traditional rice and curry with friendly service.
  • Barista Sigiriya – Air-conditioned, modern coffee shop with great iced drinks and sandwiches. Also one of the only places we found with solid WiFi.

Tip: WiFi and mobile signal in Sigiriya can be patchy, so plan any online work or calls around Barista hours!

Sigiriya Travel Guide: More Things to Do in Sigiriya

Want to create your own Sigiriya travel guide, itinerary or extend your stay? Here’s a full list of things to do in and around Sigiriya from this Sigiriya travel guide:

Sigiriya Travel Guide: Travel Tips for Visiting Sigiriya

  • Start hikes early: Whether you’re climbing Lion Rock or Pidurangala, start before sunrise or just after to avoid heat and crowds.
  • Bring cash: Some places don’t accept card, especially tuk tuk drivers and smaller restaurants.
  • Stay covered: Monkeys are common and curious. Keep balcony doors shut and food out of reach.
  • Use a VPN: If you’re relying on streaming, secure browsing or catching up on shows back home, I recommend using NordVPN (we used it in Sri Lanka to stream UK TV from our phones).
  • Travel insurance: Sri Lanka is generally safe, but travel insurance is always a good idea. We use SafetyWing for affordable rolling cover that works worldwide. It’s perfect for digital nomads or long-term travellers.

Sigiriya Travel Guide: Is Sigiriya Worth Visiting?

Absolutely. Even if you’re only in Sri Lanka for a short time, Sigiriya deserves a place on your itinerary.

The Sigiriya travel guide combines ancient history, stunning natural beauty and unforgettable hikes makes it one of the most rewarding destinations in the country.

Whether you tackle both rocks, sip iced coffee in the shade, or venture out on safari, 48 hours in Sigiriya will leave a lasting impression.
