How to Spend 1 Day in Monterey, California
If you only have 1 day in Monterey, don’t worry, you can still see many of the highlights.
In this guide, I’ll share why you should visit, the best time to go, famous filming locations, how to get there, where to eat, and of course, a full breakdown of what to do in a single day.
Why Visit Monterey?
Before diving into the details of what to see and do during your 1 day in Monterey, let’s talk about what makes Monterey so special.
This little slice of California offers a vibe you won’t quite find anywhere else.
On one hand, it’s steeped in history. Once a bustling hub for the sardine canning industry, immortalized in John Steinbeck’s Cannery Row.
On the other, it’s an absolute haven for nature and wildlife lovers. Imagine watching sea otters bobbing in kelp beds, spotting whales breaching offshore, or walking along craggy cliffs that look like something out of a movie.
It’s also got a laid-back artsy side, with galleries, independent shops, and cozy cafés tucked around town.
Pair that with world-class food (seriously, the seafood here is next-level) and easy access to iconic drives like 17-Mile Drive and Big Sur, and you’ve got a destination that checks all the boxes: scenic, cultural, and totally unique.

Best Time to Visit Monterey
So when should you plan your trip? The truth is, Monterey is beautiful year-round, but each season has its own perks.
Fall (September through November) is arguably the best. The summer crowds have thinned, the weather is mild, and the water is clearer. Which means if you’re doing whale watching, kayaking, or diving, visibility is incredible.
Plus, it’s harvest season in nearby wine country, so you can easily tack on a vineyard stop to your 1 day in Monterey itinerary.
Spring (March to May) is also gorgeous. Wildflowers start to bloom along the coast, and you’ll get mild, pleasant weather without the summer rush.
Summer (June to August) is the most popular time to visit. You’ll find the town buzzing with tourists, festivals, and events, but accommodation prices jump, and you might get Monterey’s famous “marine layer”: a morning fog that takes a while to burn off.
Winter (December to February) is cool and quieter, but still lovely. Hotels tend to be cheaper, and the moody coastal vibes make for stunning photography.
If you don’t mind layering up, winter can be a hidden gem season for your 1 day in Monterey.
Monterey on the Big Screen
Monterey isn’t just a pretty face, it’s also a star.
If the town feels strangely familiar as you’re wandering around, there’s a good chance you’ve seen it on screen.
Most famously, Monterey is the backdrop for HBO’s Big Little Lies. I’ve watched the TV series and also read the book, so I was very excited about visiting the different locations.
Those sweeping shots of crashing waves, cliffside homes, and the iconic Bixby Creek Bridge? All part of Monterey and the nearby Big Sur coastline. Watching the show almost feels like a love letter to the area.
But it’s not just modern TV that’s fallen in love with Monterey. The town has appeared in countless films and documentaries over the years, showcasing its rugged beauty.
Even Steinbeck’s works, like Cannery Row and Of Mice and Men, immortalize the area’s character and history.
If you’re a fan of literary or cinematic travel, spending 1 day in Monterey feels like stepping into a set.

Things to Do in Monterey (for 1 Day in Monterey)
If you’ve only got 1 day in Monterey, don’t stress. You can still get a great taste of what makes Monterey special.
Here’s how I’d spend your 1 day in Monterey:
1. Start with Coffee and Pastries at Alta Bakery
This charming little spot is perfect for easing into your 1 day in Monterey. Housed in a historic building, Alta Bakery serves fresh pastries and artisan coffee that locals and travellers swear by.
Grab a latte and a flaky croissant, then take a moment to soak in the garden courtyard before hitting the town.
We actually had breakfast here during the morning of our 1 day in Monterey and it was so fresh and beautiful. I’d highly recommend the avocado toast here and sitting in their courtyard to enjoy it in the sunshine.

2. Wander Along Cannery Row
Cannery Row is Monterey’s most famous street, lined with shops, restaurants, and attractions.
Once a working sardine-canning hub, it’s now full of boutiques, wine-tasting rooms, and little nods to its industrial past.
Even if you’re not shopping, it’s fun to stroll along and peek into the eclectic storefronts.
3. Visit the Monterey Bay Aquarium
This isn’t your average aquarium. The Monterey Bay Aquarium is world-renowned for its huge tanks, kelp forests, and incredible exhibits featuring everything from sea otters to jellyfish.
Even if you’re not usually into aquariums, this one is a must-see.
It’s as much about conservation and education as it is about entertainment, and the building itself offers jaw-dropping views of the bay.
4. Bike or Walk the Coastal Recreation Trail
If you want to soak up those Pacific Ocean views, this is the way to do it. The trail runs for 18 miles, but even a short stretch will give you postcard-worthy scenery.
You’ll likely spot sea lions lounging on rocks and kayakers paddling in the distance. Renting a bike is an easy way to cover more ground if you’ve got the energy.
5. Drive 17-Mile Drive in the Afternoon
No day trip to Monterey is complete without this iconic drive.
Winding through Pebble Beach and Pacific Grove, 17-Mile Drive is dotted with scenic pull-offs where you can stop and take in jaw-dropping views of the rugged coastline.
The Lone Cypress tree is a highlight, and if you time it right, catching the sunset along the drive is pure magic.
If you’re a golf fan, make sure to stop at Pebble Beach Golf Course where many famous golf tournaments have taken place. I had to make a stop here for my dad who’s a huge golf fan and send some photos back home.
There’s a lot of history here!

Where to Eat in Monterey
Good food is practically part of the Monterey experience, and you’ll want to carve out time for at least one memorable meal during your 1 day in Monterey.
- The Sardine Factory: An iconic, slightly upscale spot with a menu full of fresh seafood and California classics. Perfect for a romantic dinner or celebrating a special trip.
- Old Fisherman’s Grotto: Known for their award-winning clam chowder, served in a sourdough bread bowl. It’s casual but cozy, and the views of the wharf make it even better.
- LouLou’s Griddle in the Middle: A tiny diner right on the wharf that’s famous for its huge portions and friendly vibe. Great for breakfast or brunch if you want to eat like a local.
Where to Stay in Monterey
If you’re only here for 1 day in Monterey, you might not need a place to stay. But let’s be real, once you arrive, you’ll probably want to linger.
Here are three solid options for every budget if you want to spend more than 1 day in Monterey:
Luxury Stay in Monterey: InterContinental The Clement Monterey
Right on Cannery Row, with oceanfront rooms and upscale amenities. You’ll feel spoiled here.
Mid-Range Stay in Monterey: Spindrift Inn
Romantic, cozy, and full of charm. Many rooms come with fireplaces, which makes it perfect for a coastal getaway.
Budget Stay in Monterey: Monterey Pines Inn
Simple, affordable, and well-located. If you’re planning to stay an extra night or two without breaking the bank, this is a solid choice.
This is also where we stayed for one night in Monterey and would highly recommend it if you’re doing a West Coast road trip like we were.

How to Get to Monterey
Monterey is surprisingly easy to reach, and you’ve got a few different options depending on where you’re starting from.
How to Get to Monterey from San Francisco
About a 2-hour drive. The fastest way is via Highway 101, but if you have time, take the scenic Pacific Coast Highway (Highway 1).
The views are unreal.
How to Get to Monterey from Los Angeles
Around 5–6 hours via Highway 101, or a full-day adventure (8+ hours) if you take Highway 1.
If you’re road-tripping, Highway 1 is the way to go. You’ll pass through Santa Barbara, Big Sur, and other stunning coastal towns.
How to Get to Monterey from San Jose
Just over an hour away, making Monterey an easy day trip if you’re based in Silicon Valley.
How to Get to Monterey from Big Sur
Only about 45 minutes north, so you can easily pair the two together. Many travellers hit Big Sur first, then relax in Monterey before heading inland.
Suggested 1 Day in Monterey Itinerary
- Morning: Start with coffee and pastries at Alta Bakery, then stroll along Cannery Row and spend a couple of hours at the Monterey Bay Aquarium.
