If you’re considering moving abroad to another country, there’s much that you need to think about before you get going.
If you’re going alone it’s much easier because you only have to consider yourself and what you need, but if you’re taking a family with you then there’s a lot more planning involved.
The very first thing that you have to think about when you’re moving abroad is where you want to go.
If you’re currently living in an English speaking country, then most people think it makes sense to move to another English speaking country so that they can get to know the culture there.
Then there are others who want to move for work or for fun to a country that doesn’t necessarily speak the same language. And if that’s you, then keep reading because there are some things that you need to consider before you move abroad.
1. Visa Considerations
Unfortunately, you can’t just fling a dart at a map and choose a country. There are visa considerations that could stop you from moving somewhere that you want to go.
If you’re bringing kids with you, then you have to think about whether you’d have to pay for their education at an International School or even at a public school.
Having the right visa can make a difference because permanent visas often mean that school is free depending on the type of school, but temporary visas often mean that you have to pay. You need to dive into the visa considerations for the country that you are thinking about moving to before you can even know if it’s an option.
2. Consider Your Lifestyle
Do you love to snow and get active? Then you may want to move to Canada. If surfing the beaches is your thing, then moving to Australia could be a good idea.
Ideally, you need to choose a location that matches the lifestyle that you’re hoping to embody. Going to Japan, for example, is great if you love living in walkable places. You don’t want to have to get behind the wheel of a car to drive everywhere, so going to a walkable town is a great idea.
Think about what you want from your future and find a country that matches.
3. It’s All About the Money
One of the main considerations for any move is how much it’s going to cost. Obviously, the further you go, the more expensive it gets.
But visas cost money. Medicals cost money. Police checks cost money. Setting up in a new country costs money because you need to find a house and furniture. You might have to pay for education. You need to get insurance. You may need to buy a car.
All of these considerations go a lot deeper than you think. Start making that list now, and start figuring out whether you have the budget to be able to move.
4. Are You Going it Alone?
Moving alone abroad is one thing, but moving alone to a country where you absolutely know nobody is another.
If you’re going to secure a house in a new country, it can often help to have somebody there who knows the lay of the land and can look at houses for you before you get there.
A significant step in planning your relocation is whether or not you’re going to be able to build routes, and can you do that alone? If so, go for it.
