Ten days. 4,000+ kilometres.

It’s raw, real, and unforgettable, and the best way to cross the country without the stress of doing it solo.
I spent 10 days crossing Australia on this Adelaide to Perth road trip with an amazing group of 10 travellers from all over the world.
Our guide Dan and his partner Marianne were genuinely two of the best humans I’ve ever travelled with. They were funny, patient, knowledgeable and so passionate about nature, culture and the land.

Who Are Untamed Escapes?
Untamed Escapes is an Australian small-group tour company focusing on immersive, sustainable, community-driven experiences. Think:
- Nature
- Adventure
- Wellness
- Cultural connection
- Off-grid moments
- Sustainable and slow travel
They run tours in South Australia, Western Australia and the Northern Territory, including Kangaroo Island, Eyre Peninsula, Margaret River, and the iconic Adelaide to Perth road trip.
Their philosophy is all about getting you off the beaten track while still feeling safe, supported, and part of a community.
As someone who normally travels independently with my boyfriend, this trip completely changed how I see group travel.
Why Choose a Group Adelaide to Perth Road Trip Instead of Self-Drive?
I love a road trip as much as anyone… but there are some experiences that feel bigger, better, and easier when you share them with a group.
Here’s why this Untamed Escapes Adelaide to Perth road trip tour is 100x better as a group trip:
1. You don’t have to worry about driving 4,000+ km
The Nullarbor is extraordinary, but exhausting.
Having a guide handle all driving means you can nap, read, stare out the window, snack, repeat.
2. You get insider knowledge you’d never find alone
Hidden hikes, safe wild swimming spots, cultural details, wildlife behaviour, geology, plants, history… Dan somehow knew it all.
3. It’s SO much safer
You’re crossing one of the most remote regions on Earth. Group = safety.
4. The food is unreal (and included!)
Daily breakfasts and dinners are provided, and somehow taste 10x better when you’re camping under the stars.
5. You make friends for life
10 strangers → 10 days → emotional wreck saying goodbye in Perth.
6. Someone else handles the logistics
Permits, national park fees, campsite bookings, equipment, fire bans, border quarantine rules…
Let someone else stress about it.
Why This Adelaide to Perth Road Trip Belongs on Your Australia Bucket List
- Sleeping under the Milky Way
- Sunrise hikes
- Meeting wild camels, kangaroos, emus, dolphins and lizards
- Camping on white-sand beaches
- Crossing the iconic Nullarbor
- Seeing cliffs that look like the edge of the world
- Learning from First Nations guides
- Eating around campfires every night
- Watching the landscape shift from red desert to turquoise coast
It is genuinely one of the most unique travel experiences Australia offers, and it feels like stepping into a documentary.
Untamed Escapes Adelaide to Perth Road Trip Tour: Full 10-Day Itinerary and My Experience
Below you’ll find absolutely everything that we got up to on our 10 day Adelaide to Perth road trip with Untamed Escapes.
If you’re considering booking this tour, hopefully this gives you an insight into what incredible things you can expect.
1. Day 1 Adelaide to Perth Road Trip: Adelaide → Flinders Ranges
Day One started in the dark at 6:30am in Adelaide, where I was still half-asleep but buzzing with nerves.
One by one, the group started to arrive (ten of us in total) and honestly, from the moment I met everyone, I knew it would be a good trip.
We had travellers from the US, Germany, Belgium, Switzerland, Wales, Australia and the Netherlands, all with that familiar mix of excitement.
Once the bags were packed and coffee had been acquired, we left the city skyline behind and watched the landscape slowly transform into red, open country.
Our first stop was Port Germein, home to the longest wooden jetty in the Southern Hemisphere. Standing on it, looking out across the calm water as the morning sun hit, was the perfect early taste of regional South Australia.
Back on the road, Dan suddenly slowed down and pointed to a sleepy lizard casually sunning itself in the middle of the road. Cue ten people jumping out with cameras like it was a celebrity sighting.
We continued through the tiny town of Wilmington, where we stopped for lunch. It felt like stepping back in time: closed shops, quiet streets, a single café, and a pub that probably hasn’t changed since the 1950s.
Next was Hancock’s Lookout, an underrated gem overlooking the Spencer Gulf. The sky was insanely clear, the wind gentle, and the whole scene felt like the calm before the adventure.
That night we camped at Spear Creek Holiday Park, nestled in the foothills of the Flinders Ranges.
After setting up our swags for the first time, we did a 2-hour bushwalk through the rugged terrain with goats trotting around the mountains, the sun dipping behind the hills, and the classic rusty-red soil glowing under golden hour.
Dinner was chicken, veg, and rice and somehow tasted like a gourmet meal after the long day.
Then it was time for our first night sleeping under the stars. The sky didn’t even look real with no light pollution, no clouds, just the Milky Way stretching from horizon to horizon.
2. Day 2 Adelaide to Perth Road Trip: Kimba, Talia Caves & Coodlie Park
We kicked off Day Two with coffee in Port Augusta, where the outback meets the water.
From there, we drove to Kimba, the literal halfway point of Australia. This town pleasantly surprised me. It was colourful, quirky, and full of character.
We explored the silo art, which towers over the town and depicts a beautiful rural scene. Then we took the mandatory photo with the Big Galah (because Australia loves giant statues of anything).
We browsed the artisan stalls at Workshop 26, and Untamed Escapes provided our lunch, which was fresh and delicious after a busy morning.
In the afternoon we visited the dramatic Talia Caves, enormous wave-carved caverns right on the coastline. The air smelled salty, the wind was wild, and the ocean roared against the rocks below.
Next stop: sandboarding at Lake Newland Conservation Park. We weren’t very successful and it was very windy, but the views from the top of the dunes were amazing.
We ended the day at Coodlie Park Eco Retreat. This is one of those “proper bush camping” experiences with DIY bucket showers and long-drop toilets.
It was chaotic and wholesome at the same time.
Dinner was a classic Aussie BBQ, followed by marshmallows toasted around the campfire as the stars lit up the sky.
Everyone was settling into the rhythm of camp life now with dusty clothes, messy hair, and an excitement to sleep under the stars.
3. Day 3 Adelaide to Perth Road Trip: Streaky Bay, Surf Lessons & a Wild Storm
Day Three began with a visit to Murphy’s Haystacks, giant ancient rock formations scattered across farmland. The rocks look like they belong on another planet with pinkish-orange colouring, and sculpted by millions of years of wind.
Next was the The Granites, another otherworldly landscape where you can climb over wave-like stone formations.
We arrived at Streaky Bay for coffee and lunch at Drift which was easily one of the cutest coastal towns on the Eyre Peninsula. The water is bright blue, the streets are calm, and the whole place feels like a summer postcard.
In the afternoon, the group had a surf lesson at Surfers Beach. I opted out (because sharks do live in the water and I’ve seen Jaws too many times), but watching everyone else learn was fun and wholesome in equal measure.
We camped that night at Penong Caravan Park, a surprisingly charming spot filled with old wagons and quirky decorations.
After a hearty pub dinner at the Penong Hotel, we walked outside into the most dramatic thunderstorm with lightning ripping across the sky every few seconds.
To stay dry, we all swag-camped in the giant kitchen shed, which ended up feeling like a wild school sleepover.
4. Day 4 Adelaide to Perth Road Trip: The Nullarbor Crossing
We left early for the Nullarbor, one of the most iconic and remote journeys in Australia.
We stopped at the famous 92km straight road sign, then continued driving through endless red dirt, shrubs, and wide-open plains. It was eerie, peaceful, and mesmerising all at once.
At the Nullarbor Roadhouse, a friendly (and extremely photogenic) dingo wandered around, looking like it owned the place.
Then came one of the biggest highlights of the entire trip, the Bunda Cliffs.
These cliffs extend for 200km and drop straight into the Southern Ocean. Standing on the edge felt like standing at the end of the world.
The big moment of the trip had come and we crossed the border into Western Australia.
We took photos with the big kangaroo statue and finished the day at Madura Pass Oasis Motel, where we had spaghetti bolognese and fell asleep exhausted from the heat and long drive.
5. Day 5 Adelaide to Perth Road Trip: Wild Camels, Roadhouses & Lucky Bay
Day Five meant a 4am start, but watching the sunrise over the Nullarbor made it worth it.
We even spotted wild camels in the early light which was amazing as I’m so used to thinking they belong in the desert, not outback Australia.
We made stops at:
• the “World’s Longest Golf Course” (Nullabor Links)
• Balladonia Roadhouse
• the mining town of Norseman
But nothing could prepare me for the moment we arrived at Cape Le Grand National Park.
The colours didn’t look real. White sand so bright it hurt your eyes, turquoise water, granite headlands, and kangaroos hopping around the campsite.
We camped at Lucky Bay, one of the most beautiful campsites in the country.
Our swags were pitched just metres from the beach, and we even saw dolphins at sunset, gliding through the water as the light turned pink and orange.
6. Day 6 Adelaide to Perth Road Trip: Sunrise Hike & Hellfire Bay
Another early morning, this time to climb Frenchman’s Peak before sunrise. The hike was steep and windy but seeing the first light spill across the national park was magical.
Later we completed the Hellfire Bay to Lucky Bay coastal hike, which was very challenging but rewarding. Think endless blue water, wildflowers, sweeping cliffs, and not another soul in sight.
The afternoon was blissfully slow: sunbathing, napping, grabbing a book, dipping your toes in the water.
Dinner was creamy carbonara, followed by more kangaroo encounters around the campsite.
7. Day 7 Adelaide to Perth Road Trip: Esperance → Stirling Ranges
We woke the next morning to a family of kangaroos grazing beside our swags. It was the kind of morning that makes you fall in love with Australia all over again.
After coffee in Esperance, we explored Twilight Beach and West Beach, both with unbelievably blue water.
We then headed inland to Stirling Range National Park, one of WA’s lesser-known gems.
The landscape shifts dramatically here with rugged mountains, deep valleys, and a much cooler climate.
We camped at Mount Trio, which had great facilities and a peaceful, forested setting. The camp manager was actually from Liverpool so it was nice to talk about another place I used to call home.
Dinner was tacos and the vibe was immaculate as we sat around the fire telling stories before heading to bed.
8. Day 8 Adelaide to Perth Road Trip: Castle Rock, Elephant Rocks & Forest Camping
We started the day with the Castle Rock Granite Skywalk hike, a 5km trail that ends with a bit of a scramble and a viewing platform suspended over granite boulders.
The views were jaw-dropping.
Next stops:
• Nature’s Bridge
• The Gap: where the ocean smashes into a narrow chasm
• Denmark for lunch
• Elephant Rocks: a beach so beautiful it almost doesn’t look real
After exploring the Giant Tingle Tree walk, we drove to Quinninup Eco Tourist Park for the night.
This campsite had the most kangaroos I’ve ever seen. They were everywhere, hopping around, lounging under trees, watching us cook.
Dinner was a BBQ feast and we fell asleep to the sounds of the forest.
9. Day 9 Adelaide to Perth Road Trip: Margaret River Magic
We began the morning at Mammoth Cave, wandering through the limestone chambers while learning about local conservation.
Lunch was in Margaret River, followed by wine tasting at Stormflower Vineyard. Then came the Margaret River Chocolate Factory, which was exactly as dangerous as it sounds.
We camped at Fair Harvest Farm for our final night, a dreamy property used for yoga retreats. There were horses wandering around, rabbits hopping through the grass, and a café onsite.
Our final group dinner was burgers, and the night felt peaceful and wholesome.
10. Day 10 Adelaide to Perth Road Trip: Ngilgi Cave & Busselton → Perth
Our last morning was a slower start, leaving at 8am.
We had time to enjoy a great mug of coffee at Harvest Farm before heading to Ngilgi Cave for a cultural walk with local Aboriginal guide Josh.
This was one of the most meaningful parts of the whole trip. He shared stories, songs, and traditions passed through generations.
We stopped at the famous Busselton Jetty, had lunch at Hummingbird Café, then drove the final stretch into Perth.
The goodbyes were emotional. Ten days together feels like months when you’re travelling like this.
My boyfriend and I spent our final night in Perth at Pensione Hotel before flying back to Sydney the next day.
