While we were planning the Cambodia leg of our backpacking trip, we were also watching the TV show “Race Across the World”. A couple on that show visited the Battambang Bat Caves during their time in Cambodia and we were sold.
We decided then and there that Battambang would be the next city we visit after Siem Reap. And we are very glad we added this town to our itinerary.
Nestled in the heart of Northwest Cambodia, Battambang is a charming provincial capital known for its rich history, colonial architecture, and vibrant arts scene.
Less touristy than Siem Reap, Battambang offers travellers a glimpse into authentic Cambodian life and culture, with its bustling markets, countryside, and landmarks.
It was clear to see that Battambang is much less developed than Siem Reap. During our time there, the roads were under construction and not roads at all, and we didn’t come across more than five tourists in the city.
The complete opposite to Siem Reap, it also made it a very interesting place to visit and felt off the beaten track. We stayed for two nights which was more than enough time to explore.

How We Got to Battambang, Cambodia
Battambang was our second stop during our time in Cambodia. We left Siem Reap and took a 3 hour bus straight there.
We booked our bus through 12Go Asia, and booked around 90% of our travel throughout Asia using this platform. Super reliable and very handy for all transports across the region.
When we arrived in Battambang, the minivan was ambushed by taxi drivers. This isn’t a popular tourist area, so you will be aggressively asked if you need a taxi to your hotel.
Our hotel was only a 5-minute walk away, so we chose to go on foot instead.
6 Things to See & Do in Battambang
1. Bat Caves
Head to the bat caves just before sunset and watch millions of bats emerge at dusk. It lasted around 30-40 minutes and was an incredible sight. There’s plenty of local businesses happy to offer you a seat with a great view in exchange for purchasing a drink.
2. Killing Caves
Tragically, these are right next to the bat caves and are a reminder of Cambodia’s tragic history. When visiting the bat caves, you can pay your respects at the memorial.
3. Wat Ek Phnom Temple
A Khmer temple dating back to the 11th century, adorned with intricate carvings and towering prangs dedicated to the Hindu deity Shiva.
4. Bamboo Train
Is it a tourist trap? Perhaps.
Do we recommend it? Absolutely.
Prepare for a unique experience and board the Bamboo Train, also known as the Norry. A makeshift rail vehicle – essentially wheels with a bamboo sheet on top – powered by a small engine.
For roughly $5 each, you can hop on this inventive mode of transportation while in Battambang. Here’s the catch: if another vehicle approaches on the single track, the lighter-loaded Norry will be disassembled, allowing the other to pass, and then reassembled to continue the journey.
5. Colonial Architecture and Historic Sites
Stroll through Battambang’s picturesque streets lined with colonial-era buildings, including the Governor’s Residence, Psar Nath Market, and Old Railway Station, each steeped in history and charm.
6. Phare Circus
Witness Battambang’s vibrant arts scene at the Phare Ponleu Selpak Circus, where talented performers blend acrobatics, theatre, and music.
Top Places to Eat in Battambang
Lan Chov Khorko Miteah
The dumplings and noodles here were great and so cheap. When we arrived we were the only customers so were slightly sceptical but trusted the Google reviews. Twenty minutes later, nearly all of the tables were taken.
Flavours of India
On our last night we were craving an Indian and this place was perfect. They even served Nepalese momos that were delicious. If we ever go back to Battambang, we will be ordering more momos from here, for sure.
Heart Coffee
This coffee shop was located right outside of our hotel and made for the perfect place to grab takeaway coffee in the morning. It was incredibly cheap too, even for Cambodia standards.
Kinyei
We spent a morning here working on our laptops. The cafe had solid WiFi, delicious coffee and tasty sandwiches.
KC Burger
We didn’t actually dine here during our time in Battambang, but visited twice to have a drink and take a break from exploring the city. The burgers are meant to be really good.
Jaan Bai
Another spot that we didn’t dine in, but this place came highly recommended both on Google and by the hotel staff. It was on our list to visit, however, with only two nights and cravings for dumplings and an Indian we never got around to going here.
Where We Stayed
During our time in Battambang, we stayed at The Royal Hotel. While it wasn’t the most luxurious hotel, it certainly served its purpose for our two-night stay.
The hotel’s location was convenient, situated near the bus station and just a five minute walk from the main area of the city.
When looking for somewhere to stay in Battambang, we would recommend looking at the area south of the river, and around Streets 1.5, 2 and Pub Street.
