This blog post is all about the Hay Festival 2025.
What is the Hay Festival?
If you’re into books, big ideas, and that magical mix of countryside and culture, then the Hay Festival is probably already on your radar. Or at least, it should be.
Held every year in the adorable little town of Hay-on-Wye in Wales (aka “the town of books”), this festival is basically a dream for readers, writers, and anyone who loves a good story.
It all kicked off back in 1988, when a bunch of book lovers decided to create a space where people could come together, chat about ideas, and celebrate all things literary. What started as a local event around a kitchen table has now grown into one of the most iconic literary festivals in the world, with pop-up versions happening everywhere from Colombia to Spain.
But even as it’s gone global, the original Hay Festival has kept its relaxed, community vibe. It’s the kind of place where you might see a Nobel Prize-winning author one minute, stumble across an amazing debut writer the next, and end the day with a pint while chatting to fellow book lovers.
It’s smart, it’s thought-provoking, and it’s just a really lovely way to spend a few days in the Welsh hills surrounded by great conversation and even better books.

Hay Festival 2025 is being held in Hay-on-Wye, a tiny market town right on the edge of the Brecon Beacons National Park in Wales.
It’s famous for its bookshops (over 20 in total!), gorgeous scenery, and its warm, artsy community vibe.
The festival takes place just outside the town centre in a purpose-built tented village, with stages, cafes, bookshops, bars, and chill zones scattered across the site.

Hay Festival 2025 runs from Thursday, May 22nd to Sunday, June 1st, 2025.
You can dip in for a day or two, or do the full 10-day stretch (trust me, you won’t get bored).

Where Should I Stay for Hay Festival 2025?
Hay Festival accommodation fills up fast during the festival, so if you’re planning to go, book as early as possible. Here are a few options depending on your style (and budget):
1. Stay in Hay-on-Wye (if you can snag a spot!)
Staying in the town means you can walk everywhere, soak up the atmosphere, and easily nip back for a power nap or outfit change between talks. Try:
- The Swan at Hay – A charming boutique hotel right in the centre.
- B&Bs and Guesthouses – There are lots of lovely local options on Airbnb or Booking.com, but they book up early!
2. Try Nearby Towns and Villages
If Hay is booked out, don’t worry, there are lots of pretty spots nearby:
- Glasbury, Clyro or Talgarth – Small, picturesque villages just a short drive away.
- Hereford or Brecon – Larger towns about 30–40 minutes’ drive with more hotel options.
3. Embrace Festival Vibes with Camping
Want to be right in the heart of it all? Try the Hay Festival Glamping or Camping site, just a short walk from the main venue. You can bring your own tent or book a bell tent or yurt for that boho-festival feel.
Food, Drink & Vibes at Hay Festival 2025
You won’t go hungry at Hay Festival. The site is packed with food trucks, coffee stalls, wine bars, and cosy cafés offering everything from wood-fired pizza to Welsh cakes.
There are also pop-ups from local restaurants and bars where you can grab a seat and soak in the buzz.
Inside the town, you’ll find independent cafés, a few lovely pubs (The Blue Boar and The Three Tuns are great shouts), and lots of little spots to chill with a book between events.
Top Tips for Visiting Hay Festival 2025
- Layer up: Welsh weather is unpredictable, and the tents can get chilly even in May.
- Download the programme early: Events overlap, so plan out your must-sees ahead of time.
- Leave wiggle room: Some of the best bits are unplanned. Keep space for spontaneous talks or random coffee chats.
- Bring a tote bag (or ten!): You’ll probably end up buying a few (dozen) books.
- Get there early: Events are usually punctual and seats can fill up quickly!
