Spain has long been a firm favourite among UK holidaymakers, and in 2024, it once again topped the list as the most popular overseas destination.
In fact, over 18 million Brits visited the country last year alone. With its year-round warm climate, abundant sunshine and favourable prices, it’s easy to see why so many are drawn to this vibrant Mediterranean escape.
Southern Spain is home to plenty of hidden gems and holiday hotspots. If you’re looking for a cultural city break or a relaxing beach holiday, Seville, Almeria, and Benidorm are great contenders.
1. Seville
Located in the Andalusian region, Seville is a charming city famous for its history, architecture and oranges! The orange has become an iconic symbol of the city, and you will see plenty of them on your trip as the city’s streets are lined with orange trees.
Must-visit landmarks include the Real Alcázar, which is a stunning example of Mudejar architecture and the Seville Cathedral, which was the resting place for Christopher Columbus.
Visit the beautiful Plaza del Espana, where you can hire a boat and row around the semi-circle plaza, or marvel at the tiled alcoves that each represent a Spanish Province.
Head to Triana and Santa Cruz and enjoy exploring the neighbourhood’s shops, cafes, and lively atmosphere. Why not try a traditional Spanish breakfast, consisting of fresh orange juice, coffee and a tostada?
2. Benidorm
A holiday favourite for many, Benidorm, located on the Costa Blanca, is a bustling coastal resort with award-winning beaches and lively nightlife.
It’s home to excellent Blue Flag beaches, such as Platja de Levant, which stretches over 2km long and is known for its golden sand and calm waters. Platja de Mal Pas is another with Blue Flag status and is a great choice for those wanting a slightly quieter day relaxing at the beach.
El Casco Antiguo is Benidorm’s charming Old Town. Spend the evening wandering along the cobblestone streets, browsing the shops and dining in one of the many restaurants offering delicious tapas and sangria.
For those wanting to experience the resort’s energetic nightlife, visit Calle Gerona. This strip is full of clubs and bars to keep you entertained all night long, so if you’re looking for the action, then a Benidorm holiday may be the perfect choice for you.
3. Almeria
Often considered a hidden gem, Almeria is the perfect destination for those seeking a relaxing holiday without the crowds. The province is famous for its unique geographical nature, including the Tabernas Desert and the volcanic cliffs and beaches of the Cabo de Gata National Park.
You will find many unspoilt beaches along the coastline, which you may even have all to yourself if you’re lucky. Some favourites include Playa del Mónsul and Playa de los Muertos. Be sure to pack up a cool box full of refreshments and food, as these beaches are remote, and most likely won’t have a shop or café nearby for miles.
Definitely visit the Tabernas Desert whilst you’re there. It’s the only real desert in all of Europe and is a popular filming location too. For example, ‘Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade’ and ‘The Good, The Bad & The Ugly’ both used the desert as a filming set.
