If youโ€™re travelling through the south of Sri Lanka and looking for a spot that blends laid-back surf vibes, digital nomad cafรฉs, and easy access to some of the coastโ€™s most popular attractions, Weligama is where you want to be.

We spent two nights here and used it as a base to explore Mirissa and Ahangama, two beach towns that have their own distinct personalities but are just 10โ€“15 minutes away.

Weligama itself is known for being one of the best places in Sri Lanka to learn to surf, with mellow, beginner-friendly waves and surf schools on every corner.

Whether you’re here to ride your first wave, hop from brunch spot to rooftop bar, or soak in a bit of everything, this 2 days in Weligama itinerary has you covered.

This blog post is all about a Weligama itinerary.

Where is Weligama?

Weligama is located along Sri Lankaโ€™s southern coastline, roughly halfway between Mirissa and Ahangama.

It’s easily accessible by train, bus, or tuk tuk from most major beach towns on the south coast.

โ€œWeligamaโ€ literally translates to โ€œsandy village,โ€ and the name couldnโ€™t be more accurate. The long, curved bay here is perfect for surfing, swimming, or just lying under a palm tree and doing absolutely nothing.

2 Days in Weligama Itinerary: Things to Do in Weligama

Below is how I’d recommend spending your 2 days in Weligama, with this Weligama itinerary.

During our travels around Sri Lanka, we spent 2 nights here and used it as a base to visit both Mirissa and Ahangama as well, before making our way to Galle Fort afterwards.

Weligama Itinerary Day 1

Below is an example Weligama itinerary for your first day.

Learn to Surf at Weligama Beach

Kick off your Weligama stay with a surf lesson. This is one of the best beginner beaches in all of Sri Lanka, with small, consistent waves and a long sandy bottom, meaning no rocks to worry about.

There are dozens of surf schools along the beach where you can book a group or private lesson. Prices are super affordable, and most spots offer board hire by the hour or day.

Popular surf schools:

You donโ€™t need to book far in advance, just show up and choose a board.

Brunch at Moochie’s or Nomad Cafรฉ

After your lesson, youโ€™ll be starving. Weligamaโ€™s brunch scene is low-key incredible.

Head to either:

  • Moochieโ€™s โ€“ The Bali vibes are strong here. Great smoothie bowls, avo toast, and coffee. Just be aware: service can be slow, so give yourself time if you’re catching any trains or buses. The merchandise here is also great – I wish I’d had space in my bag to buy a shirt!
  • Nomad Cafรฉ โ€“ A crowd favourite with stylish interiors, healthy plates, and great people-watching.

Other good spots:

Chill at the Beach or Visit Taprobane Island

Once youโ€™re refuelled, spend the afternoon soaking up the sun. You can walk to Taprobane Island, a tiny island just offshore that you can access by foot at low tide.

Itโ€™s private, so you canโ€™t go inside the villa, but it makes for great photos and a peaceful walk.

Rooftop Drinks at Layback or After Surf

As golden hour approaches, head to a rooftop to toast your surf-filled day.

Two favourites:

Weligama Itinerary Day 2

Weligamaโ€™s location makes it perfect for day trips. On your second day of this Weligama itinerary, head in both directions to experience the full flavour of the southern coast.

Spend the Morning in Mirissa

Hop in a tuk tuk and head west to Mirissa (10โ€“15 mins).

  • Visit Coconut Tree Hill โ€“ One of Sri Lankaโ€™s most iconic Instagram spots. A hill covered in coconut palms with panoramic ocean views. Go early to avoid the crowds.
  • Swim or snorkel at Secret Beach โ€“ Tucked away and quieter than the main beach
  • Stop by Turtle Beach โ€“ You can sometimes see turtles here close to shore, but always observe respectfully, no touching or chasing!
  • Brunch at Shady Lane โ€“ One of my favourite meals in Sri Lanka. Great smoothie bowls, epic coffee, and a cute courtyard setting. Reminded me of Bali!

Stay for a couple of hours, enjoy the beach, then head back or continue east.

Spend the Afternoon in Ahangama

From Weligama, Ahangama is 15 minutes by tuk tuk in the opposite direction.

If Mirissa is for the Instagram crowd, Ahangama is for the digital nomads. Picture this: MacBooks, matcha lattes, bare feet and board shorts, all in one place.

They’re call Ahangama the โ€œnew Bali,โ€ and while I never saw Bali 15 years ago, Iโ€™ve been recently, and I get the comparison.

Itโ€™s laid-back, full of creative energy, and has a real surf-meets-startup vibe.

Things to check out:

  • Cool cafรฉs with co-working spaces and great Wi-Fi (Cactus Cafe was our favourite)
  • Local surf breaks and mellow crowds
  • Boutique shops and small-scale nightlife

Weligama Itinerary: Where to Stay in Weligama

We stayed at Onilwe Resort for two nights in Weligama.

While it wasnโ€™t our favourite place in Sri Lanka, it was budget-friendly and a decent location. Close to the train station and walking distance to town.

Weligama Itinerary: Travel Tips for Weligama

  • Surf lessons usually cost around 3,000โ€“4,000 LKR per hour
  • You donโ€™t need to book surf schools in advance โ€“ just walk up
  • Bring cash โ€“ Many cafรฉs donโ€™t accept cards
  • Use a VPN like NordVPN to protect your data on cafรฉ Wi-Fi and access blocked content (especially handy if youโ€™re working remotely!) Get NordVPN here!
  • Travel Insurance is essential, especially when surfing or travelling by tuk tuk. I use and always recommend SafetyWing.

Why Weligama is the Perfect South Coast Base

If youโ€™re looking for somewhere that gives you access to surf, smoothies, and scenery, Weligama is a top pick.

Itโ€™s affordable, well-connected, beginner-friendly for surfers, and puts you within armโ€™s reach of both Mirissa and Ahangama.

Whether you’re backpacking through Sri Lanka or working remotely for a few weeks, this Weligama itinerary ticks a lot of boxes.
