This blog post is all about the best things to do in Tangalle, Sri Lanka.
Where is Tangalle?
Tangalle (also spelled Tangalla) is a small beach town located on the southern coastline of Sri Lanka, roughly halfway between Yala National Park and more popular beach towns like Mirissa and Weligama.
It’s known for its serene beaches, calm turquoise waters, and palm-lined coastlines.
Unlike its neighbours, Tangalle feels a bit more off-the-beaten-path. It’s ideal if you’re looking to relax without the party scene or crowds that come with busier towns.
It’s a quieter, more relaxed destination that still delivers incredible beaches, great food, and a taste of local life, minus the crowds.
It’s a perfect place to:
- Recover after exploring central Sri Lanka or doing a safari in Yala
- Start your south coast beach-hopping itinerary
- Enjoy a slower, more peaceful coastal town before diving into busier areas
I’ve created a full Sri Lanka Travel Guide with suggested routes, tips for each region, and personal recommendations, which you can download here.
How Do I Get to Tangalle?
There are a few different ways to get to Tangalle, depending on where you’re coming from:
From Yala or Tissamaharama:
- Travel time: 2 to 2.5 hours
- Best option: Taxi or private transfer
- Note: We took the local bus, as we did for most of our travels around Sri Lanka. Let me just say, the bus drivers are not shy about speed. Flying around sharp bends with the horn blaring and windows wide open? You’ll feel very alive.
From Colombo:
- Travel time: 5 to 6 hours
- Best option: Taxi, private car, or bus via Matara
- There’s no train station in Tangalle, so if you prefer rail, take the train as far as Matara, then grab a taxi or tuk tuk from there (around 1 hour).
Why Visit Tangalle?
If you’re beach hopping the south, Tangalle is a perfect first or last stop. Here’s why it stands out:
- It’s one of the most peaceful beach towns in Sri Lanka
- The beaches here are absolutely stunning: white sand, turquoise water, and no crowds
- It’s the perfect place to start or end your beach-hopping journey
- It’s a great recovery spot after early mornings in Yala or long train journeys inland
- Gorgeous, secluded beaches that look like they belong on a postcard
- Far less touristy than Mirissa or Hikkaduwa
- Great base for visiting turtle conservation projects at Rekawa
- Delicious food, friendly locals, and a peaceful atmosphere
- Great for spotting local wildlife (think monkeys and tropical birds)
- It’s often skipped by travellers short on time, which makes it all the more special

The Best Things to Do in Tangalle in 24 Hours
You won’t need a jam-packed itinerary in Tangalle, and that’s kind of the point. But if you’re wondering what to do beyond lying on the beach, here are some ideas.
Relax on Tangalle Beach
Start your morning on the sand. The main beach is wide, clean, and often completely empty. Dip your toes in the warm water and enjoy the peaceful rhythm of coastal life.
Rekawa Turtle Conservation Project
If you’re staying overnight, make time for this in the evening. Between April and September, sea turtles come to shore to lay eggs, and you can witness this with local guides from the Rekawa Turtle Watch.
It’s a responsible, conservation-focused experience that supports local efforts to protect nesting areas.
Silent Beach
Want your own slice of paradise? Just outside of Tangalle, Silent Beach is the definition of serenity. Soft sand, crystal-clear water, and hardly anyone around.
Perfect for a midday swim or snooze.
Visit Tangalle Lighthouse
Located on the tip of the town, this small lighthouse offers views of the bay and surrounding coastline. Great for a quick walk and photos.
Where to Stay in Tangalle
We stayed at Goyambokka Guest House, which was ideal for a short stay:
- It’s just a 2-minute walk to Goyambokka Beach
- The rooms are simple but clean and spacious
- There are tuk tuks nearby to take you into Tangalle town
- It’s near a handful of beachfront cafés, so you’re never far from good food and good views.
Other options include:
- Ananya Beach Resort – A more upscale option right on the beach
- Taru Villas – Mawella – Great for a boutique luxury experience
- Palm Paradise Cabanas – Set within a coconut grove, with direct beach access

Where to Eat in Tangalle
One of the highlights of our time in Tangalle was the food. From beachfront brunches to traditional Sri Lankan curries, there’s something for everyone here.
1. Tangalle Rice and Curry (a must!)
This was easily one of the best meals of our trip. We stumbled across it thanks to a travel creator’s post and decided to walk there from our hotel. Bad idea, as we were chased by a barking dog along the way (thankfully no damage done, just some panic).
Once we arrived, we caught the start of their evening cooking demonstration, where the owner explained how they cook each curry using traditional ingredients and spices, including how they make fresh coconut milk.
The dinner is buffet-style with 25+ different curry dishes, and you can go back for seconds (or thirds). It’s a fantastic way to try authentic Sri Lankan flavours in a relaxed setting.
Definitely book ahead as it’s very popular.
2. Sea Breeze
Great for breakfast or brunch. Try the avocado toast or smoothie bowls while enjoying views over the beach.
3. Mellow Yellow
A lovely spot on Goyambokka Beach, ideal for morning coffee or pancakes. Very laid-back and traveller-friendly.
4. Jayasena Stores and Restaurant
A local family-run restaurant near our guesthouse. Super affordable and delicious home-cooked food. Perfect for lunch if you’re not venturing far.

What to Eat in Tangalle
You’re in Sri Lanka, so you can’t leave without trying:
- Rice and curry – Try the buffet at Tangalle Rice and Curry for variety
- Hoppers – A breakfast staple, often with egg or sambal
- Kottu roti – Stir-fried roti chopped with veggies and optional meat/egg
- Coconut sambal – Goes with everything
- Fresh seafood – Prawns, crab, and fish are widely available on the coast
The food is fresh, flavourful, and usually very affordable. You’ll struggle to spend more than £4–£5 on a meal here.
Travel Tips for Tangalle
- Bring cash – many restaurants and small guesthouses don’t accept card
- Always carry sunscreen and mosquito spray
- Tuktuks are easy to find — always negotiate the price before hopping in
- Buy a VPN like NordVPN — Sri Lanka blocks certain websites, and using public Wi-Fi at cafés and hotels means your data isn’t always secure. I’ve used NordVPN to stream shows, access banking apps, and stay protected on the road.
Is Travel Insurance Needed in Tangalle?
Yes. Always. While Tangalle is very laid-back, travel insurance is non-negotiable. Especially in a country where hospitals are limited in rural areas and you’re likely to be hopping on buses, tuk tuks, or climbing into safari jeeps.
I personally use SafetyWing travel insurance for all my travels, including Sri Lanka. It’s budget-friendly, easy to activate (even after your trip has started), and covers everything from medical treatment to trip delays and lost luggage.
It even works on a rolling monthly subscription, which is perfect for longer trips. Read more about it in my full post: Why I Always Travel With SafetyWing.
Where to Go After Tangalle?
Tangalle is a great jumping-off point for the rest of your south coast beach-hopping adventure. Here’s where I recommend heading next:
Dikwella
A smaller town with wide, quiet beaches and great surf spots. Also home to the Wewurukannala Vihara Temple, featuring a 50m seated Buddha.
Hiriketiya
Just around the corner from Dikwella, this is one of the trendiest beach towns in Sri Lanka right now. Think surfing, smoothie bowls, and great cafés.
Mirissa
A bit busier, but popular for whale watching tours and sunset cocktails on the beach.
Weligama, Ahangama, and beyond
More surfing towns as you head west — each one with its own vibe, but all worth checking out.
Why Tangalle is a Must-Visit
It may not be packed with attractions or nightlife, but Tangalle is the place to unwind. If you’ve been hiking Ella Rock, waking up at 4am for Yala safari, or bouncing between buses — this is your reward.
With gorgeous, uncrowded beaches, amazing local food, and a peaceful atmosphere, Tangalle deserves a spot on every Sri Lanka itinerary. It’s a perfect 24-hour stop or longer, if you’ve got the time.
