Next in this series of reviews is Morven Hotel, Colombo, which was our first night’s stay when we arrived in Sri Lanka for our month-long travels around the beautiful island.
Top tip: for mobile data around Sri Lanka, we used the Airalo eSim which was super handy and easily installed onto our phones as soon as we landed in Colombo Airport!
Location
Colombo is the capital city of Sri Lanka, and usually the first stop on anyone’s journey as they arrive into the country.
We arrived bright and early into Sri Lanka at 8am, so opted to stay in the city centre to get our bearings, and since we didn’t have any further accommodation booked for our second night, nor did we have a route mapped out, it seemed the smartest choice.
Morven Hotel was in a great location, not far from the main hub of shops and transport and was always an easy pick-up location for tuk tuks to take us to and from where we wanted to go.

Cost
If you’re not already aware, myself and my boyfriend are currently backpacking around Asia. Which means, most of our hotel stays are going to be on the more budget-friendly side of the scale and not very upmarket.
However, Morven Hotel turned out to be one of our most expensive hotels on our trip around Sri Lanka, coming in at £43.97 per night for the two of us.
But it was definitely worth it. We checked in as soon as we could, made the most of the air conditioning in the room (Sri Lanka is hot) and also made use of the rooftop swimming pool to cool off.
The hotel
The hotel itself was lovely, clean, and busy with people coming and going. There were always tuk tuks outside if you needed to go anywhere and the reception staff were always great at handling requests.
We couldn’t fault the location, plus the facilities of having a rooftop pool, and our room even had a view of the Indian Ocean.
A welcome surprise I wasn’t aware of was that like Dubai, Sri Lanka also uses the same plug sockets as the UK and Ireland, so no need to bring adapters with you.
Overall review
Overall, I would definitely choose to stay here again as we didn’t have any faults with our room or the hotel itself. Our room was also very spacious and the air conditioning was wonderful.
If you’re planning to stay in Colombo when you visit Sri Lanka, I would highly recommend staying at Morven Hotel.
