This blog post is all about how to spend Christmas Day in Sydney, Australia.
If you’re wondering what to do on Christmas Day in Sydney in 2025, you’ve come to the right place.
I recently moved to Sydney, Australia at the very start of this year and will be spending Christmas Day in Sydney myself, for the first time.
I’m not new to spending Christmas abroad as over the past few years, I’ve been spending Christmas Day in New York City (the most magical place on earth).
But this year, I’m trading -15 temperatures and the Rockefeller Christmas Tree for 35 degrees and Bondi Beach. Quite the different experience, I’d imagine.
I’ve done my research and put together this guide, if you too, will be spending Christmas Day in Sydney and are at a loss for what to do and how to spend Christmas in such hot temperatures.

13 Ways to Spend Christmas Day in Sydney
If there’s one place that completely redefines what Christmas looks like, it’s Sydney, Australia.
Instead of snow and mulled wine, you’ll be swapping to sunshine, seafood, and swims in the Pacific Ocean.
Christmas Day in Sydney is all about barbecues, beach parties, and soaking up those summer vibes, and trust me, it’s a Christmas Day you’ll never forget.
Whether you’re on holiday and spending your first festive season abroad, or a local looking for something new to do, here’s your ultimate guide on how to spend Christmas Day in Sydney.
From beach barbecues to harbour cruises, hikes, high teas, festive lights and more.
1. Sydney Harbour Boat Party
Nothing says an ‘Australian Christmas’ quite like celebrating on the water.
Sydney Harbour comes alive on Christmas Day with private charters and festive boat parties that sail right past the Opera House and under the Harbour Bridge.
Imagine sipping a glass of bubbles, music playing, a sea breeze in your hair, and the skyline sparkling behind you. It’s pure magic.
Many companies offer all-inclusive Christmas Day cruises with buffets, live entertainment, and drinks packages, so you can just sit back and enjoy.
Some popular options include Captain Cook Cruises and Sydney Sea Harbour Escapes. Just make sure to book early, as these cruises sell out fast!
2. Spend Christmas Day at Bronte Beach
Bondi Beach might get all the attention, but Bronte Beach is where the Christmas party happens.
The beach will more than likely be packed to the brim with Working Holiday Visa holders, umbrellas, sunburnt skin and tipsy carollers. Bronte Beach held the unofficial Christmas Day party in 2024 and it’s lined up for 2025.
Locals and travellers gather here in their Santa hats and swimwear, with picnic blankets, coolers and sunscreen bottles spread out across the sand.
There’s a great coastal pool if you prefer a calmer dip, and you can walk the scenic Bondi to Bronte coastal trail before setting up for your beach day.
If you want to avoid the crowds and chaos of Bronte Beach (believe it or not), head to the iconic Bondi Beach on Christmas Day for a less-rowdy crowd.
Pack your sunscreen, Bluetooth speaker, and a cool bag of snacks and get there early. This is Aussie Christmas done right.
3. Enjoy a Traditional Christmas Dinner
If you’re craving something closer to home, Sydney has plenty of hotels and restaurants serving a traditional Christmas lunch or dinner with all the trimmings.
Think roasted turkey, ham, potatoes, and pavlova for dessert (an Aussie staple, and my favourite).
Top spots include the Sir Stamford at Circular Quay, The Langham, and O Bar & Dining for sweeping harbour views. You’ll usually need to book in advance for Christmas Day sittings, as these spots fill up fast.
It’s a great option for solo travellers, couples, or anyone missing the feeling of a festive feast, just in sunnier surroundings.
4. Have a BBQ on the Beach
Now for a truly Aussie tradition: the Christmas barbecue.
Instead of roast dinners by the fire, you’ll find people grilling prawns, sausages, and burgers right by the ocean.
Beaches like Coogee, Manly, and Tamarama Beach have public BBQ facilities available on a first-come, first-served basis.
Bring your own cooler full of food, reusable plates and cutlery, a few Christmas tunes, and you’ve got yourself the perfect Sydney-style Christmas meal.
Don’t forget your Santa hat and plenty of sunscreen!
5. Watch a Classic Christmas Movie
After a day in the sun, there’s nothing better than winding down with a festive film.
A few outdoor cinemas, like Westpac OpenAir Cinema and Moonlight Cinema, often show Christmas classics like Love Actually, Elf, and Home Alone in the lead-up to Christmas.
If you’re spending Christmas night indoors, why not make it a movie marathon? Pop on the fairy lights, order takeaway, and enjoy your favourite holiday films with a cold drink instead of hot cocoa.
It’s Christmas, Aussie-style!
6. See the Christmas Lights at Night
Sydney transforms into a twinkling wonderland at Christmas. Even on Christmas Day itself, you can stroll through the city and see the beautiful light displays.
Don’t miss Martin Place, Pitt Street Mall, and the QVB Christmas tree, which is one of the tallest indoor Christmas trees in the Southern Hemisphere.
The Darling Harbour area also lights up beautifully at night, with reflections dancing off the water.
If you want something truly special, catch the Sydney Christmas Lights Trail, which runs throughout December with projections and festive installations across the city.
7. Climb the Sydney Harbour Bridge
For the ultimate Christmas memory, book a Harbour Bridge Climb.
It’s one of Sydney’s most iconic experiences and gives you panoramic views over the city, the Opera House, and the harbour.
It’s especially stunning around sunset or twilight on Christmas Day.
BridgeClimb Sydney even offers special Christmas climbs in December, complete with Santa hats and photo packages.
It’s the perfect way to do something unforgettable while still feeling festive.
8. Visit Taronga Zoo
If you’re spending Christmas Day in Sydney with kids (or just love animals), Taronga Zoo is a great choice.
Located right across the harbour, you can take a short ferry from Circular Quay and spend the day meeting kangaroos, koalas, and giraffes with Opera House views in the background.
Taronga Zoo sometimes hosts festive activities and themed experiences in December, so check the website ahead of time.
It’s a fun, relaxed way to spend the day surrounded by Australia’s wildlife.
9. Explore SEA LIFE Sydney Aquarium
Prefer something indoors and cool? The SEA LIFE Sydney Aquarium at Darling Harbour is open over the Christmas period and is a great place to escape the summer heat.
You’ll walk through underwater tunnels filled with sharks, stingrays, penguins, and turtles.
It’s the perfect way to spend Christmas Day for families, couples, or solo travellers who want a mix of festive fun and sightseeing without being out in the scorching sun all day.
10. Stop by WILD LIFE Sydney Zoo
Located right next to the aquarium, WILD LIFE Sydney Zoo lets you meet iconic Aussie animals without leaving the city.
From Tasmanian devils to wallabies, it’s a great place to get a taste of the Outback in the heart of Darling Harbour.
Sometimes they even host Christmas-themed photo ops with native animals. So it’s a great alternative if Taronga Zoo feels too far on Christmas Day.
11. Wake Up in a 5-Star Hotel
If there’s ever a time to treat yourself to a little luxury, it’s Christmas Day in Sydney.
I recently stayed at the Shangri-La Sydney, and honestly, it was the dreamiest staycation I’ve ever had.
From my room, I had the most incredible view of the Sydney Opera House and Harbour Bridge. The kind of view that stops you in your tracks the moment you pull back the curtains.
The early morning light shimmered across the harbour, ferries glided past, and the city felt so peaceful before the day began. I made myself a coffee, sat by the window, and just soaked it all in.
The Shangri-La goes all out during the holidays too. The lobby is beautifully decorated with a huge Christmas tree and festive touches everywhere you look.
If you’re staying here for Christmas Day in Sydney, don’t miss breakfast at Altitude Restaurant. It’s not only delicious but has panoramic views over Sydney Harbour, which makes it one of the most spectacular places in the city to start your Christmas Day in Sydney.
Whether you’re visiting Sydney for Christmas or you’re a local planning a festive staycation, waking up at the Shangri-La Sydney on Christmas morning is something you’ll never forget.
12. Take a Hike in the Blue Mountains
If you’d rather escape the crowds and Sydney, spending Christmas Day in the Blue Mountains is pure bliss.
Only two hours from Sydney by train or car, the area offers scenic lookouts, waterfalls, and peaceful trails surrounded by eucalyptus forests.
Pack a picnic and hike to Echo Point to see the famous Three Sisters, or walk the Wentworth Falls track for a quiet and refreshing Christmas away from the city.
It’s the perfect choice for nature lovers who still want a memorable, meaningful Christmas Day in Sydney experience.
13. Do a Sydney Coastal Walk
Sydney is home to some of the most beautiful coastal walks in the world, and Christmas Day in Sydney is the perfect time to do one.
The weather’s warm, the skies are blue, and the sea breeze keeps things fresh.
The Bondi to Coogee walk is a classic, stretching 6 km along cliffs, beaches, and ocean pools.
You’ll pass Tamarama (my local beach), Bronte, and Clovelly Beach along the way, with plenty of spots to stop for a swim or a snack.
Alternatively, the Manly to Spit Bridge walk offers amazing harbour views and fewer crowds.
It’s ideal if you want something a bit more peaceful on Christmas Day in Sydney.
How to Spend Christmas Day in Sydney
Whether you spend it on the sand, at sea, or up high on the Harbour Bridge, Christmas Day in Sydney is all about sunshine, smiles, and swapping the traditional for the tropical.
From morning swims to evening lights, it’s a day that feels festive and freeing all at once.
And it might just become your new favourite way to celebrate Christmas.
So grab your sunscreen, Santa hat, and sense of adventure… and make this Christmas Day in Sydney one to remember.
