I loved my recent trip to Byron Bay. There’s so much to see and do here that for our five days that we visited, we were never stuck for something to do, or bored.
The town itself is relatively small, but with other neighbouring towns like Bangalow, Mullumbimby and Nimbin, there were always other places to explore and discover once we had ticked off the classics.
If you’re visiting Byron Bay on a budget, there are also a lot of things to enjoy for free.
Surprisingly, most of the best free things to do in Byron Bay are also the main things that everyone should see and do in Byron Bay.

Can You Visit Byron Bay On A Budget?
A huge number of travellers passing through Byron Bay are backpackers trying to make their budget stretch as far as possible.
And even if that’s not you, maybe you’re just after a bargain, or maybe the bill from all those incredible restaurants I keep going on about is starting to add up faster than you planned.
Either way, no problem, I’ve got you.
Byron Bay is genuinely one of the better places in Australia to have an amazing time without spending much at all, so here’s a great list of the best free things to do in Byron Bay to work through.
So to answer your questions, yes, you really can visit Byron Bay on a budget, and I’m going to show you how.
How to Visit Byron Bay on A Budget
Before we get into the list of the best free things to do in Byron Bay, I imagine if you’re visiting Byron Bay on a budget that you’re also looking for budget accommodation and some cheap eats.
Below I’ve got a cheap (but gorgeous) hostel stay for you, and my top cheap eats recommendations in Byron Bay, before we dive into the best free things to do in Byron Bay.
Budget Accommodation in Byron Bay
If you’re looking for cheap accommodation in Byron, I can’t recommend Drifter Byron Bay highly enough.
Drifter Byron Bay is a modern (I would go as far to say ‘luxury’) hostel right in the centre of town with shared dorm options, or private room options (like our stay) and a kitchen area with free amenities like their incredible outdoor swimming pool, games room and schedule of activities to meet other backpackers.
We spent two nights at Drifter Byron Bay (and have stayed in their Canberra location before too) and the location is amazing, just a few minutes’ walk from everything to see and do in Byron Bay town.
If you’re driving around, they also have secure underground parking too which made us feel really content when we hired a car for our trip to Byron Bay.

Eating in Byron Bay on a Budget
I’d highly recommend Orgasmic and Costa Taco.
These are both places we dined at and if I lived in Byron Bay, I just know I’d be eating at Orgasmic at least once a week because their falafel, pita and hummus was probably one of my favourite meals during my visit to Byron Bay.
Costa Taco was perfect when you needed a quick snack between meals, with each taco really filling and delicious.

The 13 Best Free Things to Do in Byron Bay
Below are the best free things to do in Byron Bay. No matter if this is your first visit to Byron Bay or you’ve been to Byron Bay before, you should hopefully find something new on this list.

1. Walk (or Run) Up to Cape Byron Lighthouse
This has to be number one on every list of the best free things to do in Byron Bay, and for good reason.
The walk up to Cape Byron Lighthouse, Australia’s most easterly point, takes you along a 3.7km circuit through beach, rainforest and cliff top, and it’s completely free the whole way.
Go for sunrise if you can manage the early start, as the light coming up over the Pacific from up there is one of the best free things you’ll ever watch.
Keep your eyes on the water too, as dolphins are a regular sighting, and if you’re visiting in the cooler months, whales!
I’m not a runner in the slightest (you’ll never find me at a run club willingly) but the walk to Cape Byron Lighthouse is moderate enough, so make sure to wear good walking/running shoes and bring water.
2. Swim at Byron Bay’s Best Beaches
This is obvious, but worth saying properly: Byron Bay’s beaches cost nothing and they’re genuinely some of the best beaches in Australia.
Main Beach is the classic choice, right in town and easy to get to.
Clarkes Beach, sitting between Main Beach and The Pass, tends to have calmer water and is a great pick for an easier swim earlier in the day.
Wategos Beach, tucked below the lighthouse, gives you multi-million dollar views for the price of the walk to get there.
This was by far my favourite beach and it’s a lot quieter than the others due to its location. We were lucky to find a parking spot and spend some time at Wategos, dreaming of staying at Raes on Wategos in the future.
And Tallow Beach, longer and quieter, is worth it if you want space to actually stretch out without tripping over other people’s towels.
3. Watch the Surfers, or Have a Go Yourself
The Pass is Byron Bay’s most famous wave, and even if you’re not surfing, sitting on the sand watching longboarders glide across it is a genuinely lovely way to spend an hour.
If you’ve brought your own surf board, this is one of the best free surf spots in the country. If you haven’t, it costs nothing to just sit, watch, and enjoy the show.
4. Catch the Sunset Drum Circle
Head down to Main Beach near the rocks by Belongil as the sun goes down and you’ll likely find the sunset drum circle in full swing.
Locals and travellers turn up with drums, guitars and picnics as the sky turns orange over the hinterland.
It doesn’t run to a strict schedule, so it’s worth checking it’s on if you’re building your evening around it, but if you catch it, it’s one of the most quintessentially Byron Bay experiences going, and it costs absolutely nothing.
5. Whale and Dolphin Watching from Shore
Between roughly June and November, humpback whales migrate right along this stretch of coast, and Cape Byron Lighthouse is genuinely one of the best land based vantage points in the whole country to spot them, no boat required.
When we were at Cape Byron Lighthouse at the end of June, we actually spotted some whales in the distance with their tails splashing the water. It was magical!
Outside of whale season, dolphins are a near constant presence just off the coast, visible from the lighthouse walk, Wategos, or pretty much any decent headland.
6. Wander the Byron Community Market
On the first Sunday of every month, Butler Street Reserve fills up with the Byron Community Market.
Running since 1987 with well over 300 stalls on a typical day, plus live music across multiple stages, it’s a great market to visit if you happen to be in Byron Bay on the first Sunday of the month.
Entry is free, and you don’t have to spend a single dollar to have a great morning wandering the stalls, listening to the music, and people watching, which in Byron Bay is an excellent sport in its own right.
Obviously the temptation to buy something is real, but browsing costs nothing.
7. Catch Free Live Music
Byron Bay has a long history as something of an unofficial capital of Australian music, and a lot of that plays out for free most nights of the week.
Pubs and bars around town regularly host live sets, acoustic performers, and buskers on nearly every corner, especially in the evenings, making this one of the best free things to do in Byron Bay at night.
Check chalkboards outside venues or their social pages for who’s playing on a given night, and you can build an entire evening of entertainment without spending anything beyond the price of a drink, if you even want one.
8. Explore the Street Art and Arts and Industry Estate
Byron Bay’s creative side runs deep, and a wander through the Arts and Industry Estate turns up colourful murals, working studios, and a genuinely interesting glimpse into the town’s creative community.
It’s a nice change of pace from the beach focused parts of a Byron Bay trip, and it costs nothing beyond the time it takes to walk around.
9. Walk through Arakwal National Park
Just south of town, Arakwal National Park is a quieter, more secluded stretch of coast, home to native bushland, coastal trails, and a good chance of spotting osprey or white-bellied sea eagles if you keep your eyes up.
It’s an easy escape from the busier parts of Byron Bay and a genuinely peaceful way to spend a couple of free hours.
10. Head to the Hinterland Waterfalls
If you’ve got access to a car, the hinterland waterfalls around Byron are completely free to visit and genuinely spectacular.
Minyon Falls, around 45 minutes out in Nightcap National Park, drops 100 metres down a sheer cliff into a natural swimming hole, and you can see it from the lookout or take the longer bushwalk down to the base for a swim.
Killen Falls, a little further south, is another great free option if you want to add a second waterfall to the same day trip.

11. Swim at Lake Ainsworth
Around 25 minutes’ drive south in Lennox Head, Lake Ainsworth, better known locally as Tea Tree Lake, is a freshwater lake stained a deep amber by the surrounding tea trees, said locally to be great for your skin.
It’s free to swim, free to walk the path around the edge, and a lovely change of pace from a saltwater beach day.
12. Visit the Free Galleries
Byron Bay’s alternative art scene has produced a handful of genuinely worthwhile galleries you can wander through without spending a cent.
Lone Goat Gallery on Lawson Street hosts regular exhibitions from local visual artists, and it’s free to browse whenever it’s open.
13. Watch the Free Animal Feeding at The Farm
The Farm holds daily animal feeding sessions where you can learn a bit about the farm’s regenerative practices while watching the animals get fed, completely free.
This is one of the best free things to do in Byron Bay with kids or if you just fancy a slower, low cost afternoon before or after eating at Three Blue Ducks.

Can you enjoy Byron Bay on a tight budget?
Absolutely. Between the beaches, the lighthouse walk, the markets and the free live music, you can genuinely fill several days here without spending much beyond food and accommodation.
Do I need a car for the free activities in Byron Bay?
Most of the town centre free activities, the lighthouse, the beaches, the market and the drum circle, don’t need a car. The hinterland waterfalls and Lake Ainsworth do require one.
Is the Byron Community Market worth visiting if I’m not planning to buy anything?
Yes, absolutely. The live music, the stalls, and the overall atmosphere make it worth a wander even on the tightest budget.
My Recommendation for the Best Free Things to Do in Byron Bay
If you’re only in Byron Bay for a couple of days, prioritise the Cape Byron Lighthouse walk, a proper beach day, and the sunset drum circle if the timing lines up.
All three of these free activities cost nothing and genuinely capture what makes this town special.
If you’ve got a car and a bit more time, add a hinterland waterfall day and Lake Ainsworth into the mix, and you’ll have covered most of what Byron Bay does best without denting your budget at all.
