If you’re planning your first trip to Thailand, you’re in for a treat. Especially if you’re dreaming about the best islands in Thailand down south.

Picture turquoise waters, palm trees swaying in the breeze, and endless sandy beaches.

Southern Thailand’s islands each have their own vibe, so whether you’re looking for wild parties, underwater adventures, or a chill retreat, there’s a perfect island (or two!) for you.

I recently spent four months travelling Thailand and loved it so much. I spent two months in Bangkok, one month touring the south of Thailand and another month in northern Thailand.

Based on my time in Thailand, this list covers the best islands in Thailand, whether you’re visiting solo, with kids, as a couple or with a group of friends.

If you’re wondering which of the best islands in Thailand to visit, I’ll take you through my top picks with all the info you’ll need to hop from one paradise to the next.

1. Koh Tao

So you’ve stumbled upon this blog post looking for the best Thai islands. Well, you may not need to read any further after learning about Koh Tao.

Koh Tao, or “Turtle Island,” is a small island with big underwater appeal. It’s known for its vibrant coral reefs, clear waters, and affordable diving courses.

If you’re a certified diver, or if you want to become one, Koh Tao is one of the best islands in Thailand to do so.

This is without a doubt my favourite island in Thailand.

We loved it so much that we actually went back a few months after our first visit and spent a week relaxing here and working from the coffee shops on the beach.

Why You Should Visit Koh Tao

Koh Tao is chill, beautiful, and full of opportunities to get up close with marine life.

It’s a diver’s dream, but there’s more than diving here. You can relax on picturesque beaches, hike up to viewpoints, and also explore laid-back cafes and restaurants.

It’s the literal definition of paradise and one of the prettiest islands in Thailand.

Best Things to Do in Koh Tao

Scuba Diving in Koh Tao: With tons of dive schools, Koh Tao is one of the best (and cheapest) places in the world to get certified. Popular spots include Shark Bay, where you might see blacktip reef sharks, and Chumphon Pinnacle.

Snorkelling at Shark Bay: You can also snorkel to see reef sharks, colourful coral, and plenty of fish without going too deep.

John Suwan View Point: Hike to the top for one of the most iconic views on the island: twin beaches separated by a jungle-covered ridge.

Beach Days at Sairee Beach: This is the main stretch where you’ll find beach bars, restaurants, and perfect sunset views.

Where to Stay in Koh Tao

During our two visits to Koh Tao, we stayed at Living Chilled and Koh Tao Heritage.

Living Chilled was in a better location, closer to the beach and main restaurants, but Koh Tao Heritage was bigger and had a swimming pool.

Here are some more Koh Tao hotel options:

  • The Place Luxury Boutique Villas: Private, eco-friendly villas with jungle views, away from the crowds.
  • Sai Daeng Resort: Located on a quieter side of the island, this resort offers stunning ocean views, comfortable rooms, and also direct snorkelling access.
  • Savage Hostel: A trendy, social hostel with a rooftop pool and co-working area, located in the Sairee Beach area.

Where to Eat in Koh Tao

One of my favourite things about Koh Tao was the food. From breakfast to lunch to dinner, there are so many amazing spots to choose from.

During our two times on Koh Tao, we never had one bad meal and it’s the reason we knew we had to go back and spend a week here, and why I can’t wait to go back again.

  • Cactus: A cozy cafe on the beach, perfect for smoothie bowls and healthy breakfasts. We also spent a lot of time working from this cafe and it was always very popular.
  • 995 Duck: A must-visit for roasted duck noodles and authentic Thai dishes. Small, local, and always so popular!
  • Barracuda Restaurant & Bar: Famous for its fresh seafood, fusion dishes, and a lovely setting, making it one of Koh Tao’s top spots for dinner.
  • Vegetabowl: A healthy, veggie-friendly restaurant with a mix of Thai and Western dishes, ideal for a fresh, nutritious meal.

Coffee Shops to Work From

If you’re a digital nomad like me and want to spend some island time working, these are the best spots I found to work from in Koh Tao.

  • Cafe Culture: A favourite among digital nomads with strong Wi-Fi, good coffee, and a comfortable atmosphere.
  • Zest Coffee Shop: Located near Mae Haad, it’s known for tasty coffee and smoothies, and it also has a quiet upstairs area ideal for working.

How to Get to Koh Tao

Ferries run frequently between Koh Tao, Koh Phangan, and Koh Samui, so you can easily bounce between these islands.

From the mainland, you can reach Koh Tao by ferry from Chumphon or also Surat Thani.

On our first visit to Koh Tao, we took the ferry from Koh Samui and leaving the island, we took the sleeper train to Bangkok via Surat Thani.

On our second visit to Koh Tao, we travelled to and from Bangkok, taking a six-hour bus and two-hour ferry via Chumphon.

2. Koh Phi Phi

Koh Phi Phi, or the Phi Phi Islands as they’re sometimes known, is all about jaw-dropping beauty.

Probably the most famous Thai islands because of the movie The Beach starring Leonardo Di Caprio, this island is where turquoise waters meet limestone cliffs.

It’s one of the more popular islands in Thailand, so expect crowds. But for good reason, because it’s stunning!

Why You Should Visit Koh Phi Phi

If you’re looking for incredible beaches and waters so clear you can see straight to the bottom, Koh Phi Phi is paradise.

It’s got a great mix of party vibes and relaxation, so you can enjoy a night out but also escape to quieter spots.

Also, there are no cars or motorbikes on the island. It’s so small that you can walk absolutely everywhere.

Best Things to Do in Phi Phi Islands

Maya Bay: This is the famous beach from The Beach, and it’s so breathtaking. They’ve limited the number of visits per day to protect the area, so you need to plan ahead and go early, or take a guided tour.

Snorkelling and Diving: The waters here are fantastic for spotting vibrant coral reefs, and you’ll also see tons of marine life, from clownfish to reef sharks. Another reason it’s one of the best islands in Thailand.

Phi Phi Viewpoint: Hike up to the top for an iconic view of the twin bays below. It’s a bit of a climb, but the photos are worth it!

Nightlife in Tonsai Village: Tonsai is lively, with bars right on the beach. Check out fire shows or dance until sunrise.

  • Pirates House Restaurant & Bar: The menu is extensive, offering a mix of Indian, Thai, and Western dishes, perfect if you are in a large group or feeling indecisive.

If you’re a digital nomad like me and want to spend some island time working, these are the best spots I found to work from in Koh Phi Phi.

  • Jaja Cafe & Spice: A great coffee shop with a relaxed vibe, good Wi-Fi, and coffee options. Ideal for working over breakfast or lunch.
  • Patcharee French Bakery: Close to the pier, it’s a great spot to get some work done while watching the hustle and bustle of travellers arriving and leaving outside.

How to Get to Koh Phi Phi

You can catch a ferry from Phuket or Krabi. It’s about two hours from each, with amazing views along the way.

3. Koh Lanta

Koh Lanta is one of the quiet islands in Thailand. A more relaxed option compared to the busier islands.

Known for its laid-back vibe, this island attracts backpackers, couples, and also families looking for a peaceful escape.

While more on the quiet side, it’s still one of the best islands in Thailand to visit.

Mu Koh Lanta National Park: Go hiking, spot monkeys, and also enjoy the pristine beaches. The lighthouse here makes for a great photo op.

Scuba Diving: Koh Lanta is a fantastic dive destination with trips to nearby spots like Koh Haa and Hin Daeng, which are also teeming with marine life.

We stayed at New Coconut Bungalow in Koh Lanta and it was perfect. Directly on the beach, a few local cats to pet and the best place to do nothing but relax.

Where to Eat in Koh Lanta

Below are my top recommendations of where to eat in Koh Lanta:

  • L. Maladee Restaurant: A popular spot for Thai seafood and local dishes.
  • Fat Monkey’s: A fun spot for burgers, cocktails, and a good mix of Thai and Western food.
  • Three Sisters Restaurant: This was directly opposite our resort and always very busy in the evenings. We dined here on one of our nights and had some great Thai food.
  • The Angels: A lovely husband and wife duo run this restaurant and while you’ll be waiting sometime to eat, the food is beautiful and atmosphere is incredibly peaceful and welcoming.

How to Get to Koh Lanta

From Phuket or Krabi, take a ferry or speedboat to Koh Lanta. Ferries also run from Koh Phi Phi, making it easy to add to your island-hopping adventure.

We arrived to Koh Lanta from Ao Nang, Krabi and it was very easy to book transport with 12Go Asia.

4. Koh Lipe

Koh Lipe is a small, lesser-known island close to the Malaysian border, and it’s part of Tarutao National Marine Park.

It’s often called the “Maldives of Thailand” for its crystal-clear waters, powdery beaches, and relaxed vibe.

Unlike some of the busier islands, Koh Lipe has a more laid-back, intimate feel.

It’s perfect if you’re craving paradise without the crowds, making it one of the best islands in Thailand for couples.

Sunset Beach: As the name suggests, this is the best place to catch a stunning sunset. It’s a quieter beach with relaxed beach bars.

Boat Tours to Nearby Islands: Hop on a longtail boat to explore nearby islands like Koh Adang and Koh Rawi, where you’ll find hidden beaches and also incredible snorkelling spots.

Below are the best hotels and resorts in Koh Lipe:

  • Idyllic Concept Resort: A beachfront resort with private villas, infinity pools, and a great location on Sunrise Beach.
  • Akira Lipe Resort: A beachfront resort with modern rooms, pools, and also beautiful ocean views on Pattaya Beach.

How to Get to Koh Lipe

Reaching Koh Lipe takes a bit more effort, but it’s worth it.

From mainland Thailand, you can catch a ferry from Pak Bara Pier (around 90 minutes). If you’re coming from Koh Lanta, Koh Phi Phi, or even Langkawi in Malaysia, there are seasonal ferries that connect these islands to Koh Lipe.

Koh Phangan is one of the best islands in Thailand due to its Full Moon Party.

But there’s way more to it than just a wild night.

Phaeng Waterfall: If you’re up for a hike, this waterfall in the jungle is perfect for a refreshing swim.
